Barry used to talk big to his drinking buddies how he could remain employed at a 40 hour per week job and get intoxicated nearly every night. Unfortunately, after involving himself in this unhealthy lifestyle for roughly four-and-a-half years, he started to display numerous alcohol related problems.

Barry Begins to Experience Numerous Alcohol Related Difficulties

As an illustration, he had a real difficult time getting up for work because he felt so tired when he got up. Not only this, but most mornings Barry had a very bad hangover. Obviously, the mixture of his lack of get-up-and-go and his hangovers did not make it easy for him to get up and feel like he wanted to go to work. To make things more difficult, approximately a week ago he received his second drunk driving citation in the past three months.

To compound things further, at his job his last two work appraisals were less than suitable. And lastly, his six-year marriage with his wife had gone downhill due to his financial difficulties, angry outbursts, depression, and his lack of patience.

Even though Barry was only twenty seven years old, he frankly began to look like he was in his early forties. Unfortunately, this is what excessive and careless drinking can do to a person. And in truth he realized that he was going through the adverse consequences of alcohol dependency or alcohol abuse and that he was too young to give up his life to excessive and unhealthy drinking. So at first he tried to drink responsibly and in moderation. Regrettably, he soon found out that he lost all control after drinking his first alcoholic beverage. Stated in a slightly different way, after his first drink he invariably proceeded to get intoxicated. Since this was a situation that was repeated every time he went out to drink, this obviously worried him a great deal. In fact, he began to wonder if he was displaying some of the signs of alcoholism and alcohol abuse.

Barry Decides Schedule an Appointment to See His Healthcare Professional

After articulating his excessive alcohol drinking and his abusive and excessive drinking with his wife, he eventually decided to schedule an appointment to see his doctor. When Barry saw his healthcare practitioner, he actually declared that he has been abusing alcohol, that he may be exhibiting alcoholic signs, that he wants to refrain from drinking. He then said that drinking in moderation doesn’t seem to work for him and, consequently, he wants to learn how he can live an alcohol-free life.

Barry also told his physician about his depression and how this mental health issue was adversely affecting his relationship with his wife. His healthcare professional referred Barry to Doctor Donnelly, an alcohol and drug addiction psychologist, who influenced Barry to register in an alcohol and drug treatment center as an in-patient for alcohol detox and alcohol rehabilitation. Fortunately, Barry would also be able to get medical treatment for his depression at this treatment facility.

Refraining From Drinking Was the Best Decision Barry Had Ever Made

After four months of rigorous treatment, Barry left the residential treatment center and continued his recovery via outpatient therapy and via going to local Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. Motivated to change his life in a more productive manner, Barry bought some vitamins at a health store and a cookbook. He then joined a gym and started working out three or four times per week. Within nine months Barry was a new individual. He was eating nutritious meals, he wasn’t depressed anymore, he now looked younger than he was, he was in shape, and most significant of all, he maintained his sobriety for many months. He also didn’t resort to angry outbursts, he became more patient, and he became a more compassionate person in his relationship with his wife. Stated simply, getting and staying sober was the best decision Barry had ever made.
