Bob Winchell takes on his greatest challenge of all
Big competitions are nothing new to Bob Winchell.
The Evansville chiropractor has competed for state championships, Big Ten and national titles and won at every level, be it as an individual in track as a schoolboy or at Indiana University or with a team through softball.
Now Winchell is in the competition of his life — in the middle of a fight against cancer.
“They found a spot on my pancreas last month,” Winchell said Friday by phone from Dallas, where he is in treatment. “Then they said it had metastasized to my liver, stage four, nothing they could do.”
That was on Aug. 24. That day the oncologist gave him three to six months to live. His wife Linda, who was in the room, became inconsolable. Winchell didn’t flinch.
Instead, he delved into his own psyche, deep faith and a life spent as a respected clinician and healer. He decided to seek new answers as an alternative to accepting how long he had left to live.
“I started talking to people and watching tapes and they really opened my mind,” he said. “I decided on an approach that’s totally alien to most people. It’s holistic, a combination of heat and oxygen five days a week.
“It’s called hyperthermia or increased heat. You go to a hyperthermic chamber, where they slowly increase your body temperature to 108 degrees. You also use ozone in the area for 10 minutes. There are two things cancer can’t live in, heat and oxygen.
“I’m also doing a foot detox and a hand detox where they get this stuff out of me that looks like black soot. All I’m doing is going to treatment five days a week, resting and eating when I can.”
That Winchell is upbeat and positive is no surprise to anyone who knows him.
“If I remember it correctly,” said Charlie Siesky, his high school track coach at Harrison, “he won his (shot put) state title in 1967 on his sixth and final throw. He was the only athlete I ever had who knew more about his event than I did.
“He was a student of the shot put and absolutely everything he ever took up in his life. I was shocked when I heard what he’s going through, but I know he’ll keep fighting. He’ll never give up.”
Gary Holland, who played with Winchell or for the team he sponsored through Winchell Clinic on three national championship softball teams, said it was “Doc” who carried them.
“Some people forget he was a great player when we started with the Pub,” said Holland. “But I thought he was even better as a manager because he was a great organizer and, regardless of how bad things were going in a game or tournament, always positive. He’ll get through this, too.”
Randy Eades, another regular on many of Winchell Clinic’s best teams, said the brand was well known.
“We were known, literally, all over the world,” said Eades. “I’d be at draws for national tournaments when teams drew us and would say, ‘Oh, no’. We literally had an eight-run lead when we stepped on the field.”
Eades had been organizing a softball tournament to benefit Winchell for this weekend. Then he heard that “Doc” would not be able to attend. It’s now hoped he can attend such a benefit later.
“There’s a lot of people pulling for Doc,” said Eades. “He had a tremendous impact around here, not just on softball, but on people’s lives as a friend and doctor.”
Chris Rehn, the sports director for Evansville Parks and Recreation who dealt with Winchell often, said his people skills were the key to his success.
“With his personality he could take all these competitive guys who had always played against each other and put them together and make them a team,” said Rehn. “He had a great eye for talent and an amazing ability to get them all to play together.”
Now all those he touched can only sit back and hope, watch and pray. Winchell feeds off them, too.
“I didn’t tell many people this was happening,” he said. “I just came down here and went to work on it and people began to get word. A lot of them have reached out through sports and my practice and it’s been very rewarding to all of us.
“In life if you don’t learn to fight and never give up, you’re not going to be successful. I learned that a lot of times that last little bit of effort makes the difference between winning and losing, so I’ve got new goals.
“My daughter Cara is going to give birth to my first flesh-and-blood grandson (James Edward) on Nov. 21. I intend to see him and I hope he’s a fourth generation shot putter. Past that, I’d like nothing than to walk in that doctor’s office in a year and say, ‘I’m still here.’
“I’ll never say die. I’ll never give up.”
