On a quest to discover what people eat in a day, writer Faith D’Aluisio and photographer Peter Menzel of Napa set off on a three-year, 30-country journey.
They met a New York model, a Japanese sumo wrestler, a Latvian beekeeper, a Bangladeshi seamstress – 80 people in all who posed before a table of one day’s meals for “What I Eat: Around the World in 80 Diets.”
The 335-page compendium of consumption is the latest work from the husband-and-wife team that created the popular “Material World” books of families photographed in front of all their possessions.
Organized by calorie counts, “What I Eat” is bookended by a Maasai herder who ate 800 calories in a day and a British mom who binged on 12,300 calories.
Q: Which meal was the most delicious?
A: (Peter) Pomegranates in Iran, yak mo-mos in Tibet.
(Faith) I liked the flatbread on the street in Bangladesh. It’s just flour and water, and all they need is a hot place to throw it.
Q: Which was the hardest to stomach?
A: (Peter) Probably the strangest was the filamentous fungi meat substitute. We ate it with this guy who was a calorie restrictor. He weighed everything on a computerized scale. He and his girlfriend made stuffed eggplant with Quorn Chik’n – this meat substitute that’s like a mushroom grown in a vat. It resembled chicken on steroids.
Q: Which meal broke your heart?
A: (Faith) Well, one that stopped my heart was Millie in India who gets up at 4 a.m. and drinks 12 ounces of her own urine. She practices shivambu, from ancient Indian texts, which espouses its cleansing and curative powers.
(Peter) I’d say it was Felipe Adams, the injured Iraqi war veteran. He’s young and used to be very physical and now he has hourly phantom pains that cause him to grip his leg and grimace.
Q: What do you want people to learn from your book?
A: (Peter) That there are healthier choices they can make. One of the most interesting comparisons in the book is Louie Soto, a Native American Pima Indian in Arizona and Jose Carrillo, a Mexican rancher who lives just a little farther south. They consume the same amount of calories but Soto is way overweight and diabetic. He eats processed foods, and the rancher south of the border eats his own milk, food and cheese. Soto has my favorite quote in the book, that he tried vegetables but they were too expensive so he switched back to “regular foods.”
Q: Tell me everything you two ate yesterday.
A: (Faith) Fruit, yogurt, nuts and granola for breakfast. We had leftover fish from Tadich Grill over rice for lunch, with a caprese salad. Dinner was at a restaurant: We shared black cod and a rock shrimp appetizer, a maki roll and soft-shell crab. Rice. I had a glass of Prosecco and Peter had a beer.
Q: Are you working on another project?
A: (Peter) We’re never just working on one thing at a time, that would be too expensive. We fund our own travel, and pay ourselves back by selling images, lectures and books. So … well, we’re not talking yet about our next one, right, Faith?
