How do I draw the Lewis dot structure for a single atom?
The problem is: "Draw the Lewis dot structure for Ca. Show the formal charges of all atoms in the correct structure."
I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I entered it as Ca: (the colon represents the two valence electrons), but it marks it as incorrect. What am I missing?
I also have to do it for P, Mg2+, and S2-.
lewis dot is just the atom's symbol (in this case calcium = Ca) in the middle surrounded by the number of valence electrons (in this case 2).
so you would just draw Ca then a dot on the left and right, or together on top if u wish.
follow the above for phosphorus,
magnesium 2+ (this means there're 2 less electrons=draw regular minus 2 dots), then
sulfur 2- (this means there're 2 extra electrons=draw regular plus 2 dots)
Calcium is group 2, with a 2+ charge, here's a link to the lewis structure. The electron config ends in 4s2, so there would be 2 electrons in 1 shell, 1 up spin and 1 down… x Ca x
