Tone up for 2011

If December is the season to be jolly then January is the season to be trim.

It’s official, the nation is in diet fever. And if you’re not following some faddy eating plan, the chances are you’re consumed with guilt about all those excess Christmas calories.

A third of Brits are on a New Year diet – but most will fall off the wagon after just 43 days, latest research by Marks & Spencer reveals.

But if you’ve already taken a tumble, there are other ways to firm up.

No gym passes or deprivation diets are required for a beauty-based detox and tone regime – just persistence and products to cheat your way to a sleeker silhouette.

“Detoxing the body is about reducing the amount of toxins in our bodies,” says Noella Gabriel, Elemis director of product & treatment development.

“The benefits include aiding sleep, increasing energy levels and improving skin complexion.”

Whether you choose to swallow supplements, body brush religiously or rely on ‘miracle’ creams, embrace the season of healthy living and go from bloated to beautiful.

The lazy girl’s guide to toning up is all about taking short cuts so you don’t have to take the arduous scenic route to detoxing.

“Inch loss wraps are handy for a quick fix,” suggests beauty therapist Julie Coates (www.juliecoates.com).

“For longer term benefits try a colonic – it’s the most effective way to detox the system quickly. Cleansing the colon will flush out toxins and leave your skin glowing too, but always go to a recommended qualified practitioner.”

Kick back and feel the de-bloating benefits with a detoxing bath to help combat the build-up of toxins in the body from festive feasting.

Supplements prove popular because they don’t mean depriving yourself of your favourite foods, although for optimum results, steer clear of alcohol, sugar and caffeine, and glug plenty of water to flush out toxins.

“Life’s demands can make it hard for us to kick start our body, so detox supplements are great way to stimulate your lymph system and metabolism,” Gabriel explains.

Combine your course with daily body brushing to banish bulges, starting at the soles of your feet and working up the front and back of legs in an upward direction towards the heart.

“Body brushing can assist the skin in eliminating 1lb of toxins a day by stimulating circulation and lymphatic drainage which aids detoxification,” says Gabriel.

“It is extremely effective for encouraging cellulite deposits to disperse and for decongesting all the systems of the body.”

Anti-ageing expert Nicky Hambleton-Jones of www.LookandFeelYounger.tv says: “Feed your skin with essential oxygen to increase circulation while you workout.”

“Apply a product like Karin Herzog’s Dynamic Duo before exercise to reduce bloat, lift and re-contour the body.”

“This kit contains 4% oxygen to effectively blast away congested areas, banish cellulite and maintain firm and supple limbs.”

Iyashi Dome session, £55 for 30 minutes (020 8858 5877/www.mydetoxdiet.co.uk)

If there’s ever an escape route for getting out of a gym session, I’m game. So with a post-festive Santa belly to diminish I waddled off to try out the Iyashi Dome in London’s Waldorf Hilton, said to produce the same amount of sweat as running at least 20km.

“I really don’t tend to sweat, even during strenuous exercise,” I told the therapist.

“Ah, well you will on this,” she replied knowingly.

The dome, which resembles a lie-down sunbed, is a scary looking contraption, so not for claustrophobics. Still, with my head uncovered it felt really rather relaxing for the first 15 minutes. The dome gradually heats up the body by emitting vibrations of far-infrared rays, and over a course of treatments should help to purify and slim the body – perfect for detox season.

During the second half of the treatment, I really began to sweat profusely and had to move my arms out of the dome to cool down. The Iyashi Dome guarantees to burn up to 600kcal for every half hour session and a course is recommended to see results. After one treatment, I felt as though my body had been deep cleansed with the only side effect being excessive perspiration – as predicted! With the promise of cellulite reduction and anti-ageing effects, I’d be tempted to dip into the Iyashi Dome again.
