WBAY-TV Green Bay-Fox Cities-Northeast Wisconsin NewsKleefisch’s Cancer Treated with Taxpayer-funded Health Insurance
Republican lieutenant governor candidate Rebecca Kleefisch uses her battle with cancer in a newtelevision ad that accuses Democrat Tom Barrett of supporting a government takeover of health care.
Kleefisch says that “thanks to the highest quality health care system in the world, I won my battle with cancer.”
She doesn't mention the fact that her cancer treatments were paid for through the state health insurance plan of her husband, State Representative Joel Kleefisch.
Under their plan, Kleefisch pays $85 a month and the State picks up $1,722 monthly.
Kleefisch had a cancerous tumor removed from her colon in September.
She told The Associated Press that she's never criticized the state health insurance plan and agrees with her running mate Scott Walker that it is so good the state's teachers should be put on it as well.
Barrett spokesman Phil Walzak says the ad is intentionally misleading because Barrett does not support government-run health care.
Barrett issued a statement which says in part, “Cancer is a terrible disease that takes an terrible toll, and we wish Rebecca and her family well in confronting any health care challenges. It is distressing, however, that she and County Executive Walker would deprive others with terrible diseases and illnesses the same hope and treatment that was available for her.”
