Estudiantes, Velez play scoreless draw
BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) — Argentine league leaders Estudiantes and Velez played out a scoreless draw Friday in a disappointing match that left Estudiandes three points clear atop the Argentina Apertura championship.
Estudiantes improved to 27 points and Velez inched up to 24.
Third-place team Arsenal missed a sterling chance, losing 3-1 earlier Friday to Godoy Cruz. Arsenal remained with 23 points.
Estudiantes and Velez are widely considered the top two teams in the country, but the closely fought match offered little attacking with both defenses snuffing out scoring chances.
Arsenal scored from a penalty in the first half by Luciano Leguizamon, but Godoy Cruz went ahead 2-1 with two goals in two minutes early in the second half. Ariel Rojas scored in the 57th. In the 59th, a shot off the post hit Arsenal goalkeeper Cristian Campestrini on the rebound and went into the net. Cesar Carranza made it 3-1 in second-half injury time.
Godoy Cruz improved to 20.
On Saturday it’s: Argentinos Juniors vs. All Boys; River vs. Racing; Quilmes vs. Banfield; Lanus vs. Colon.
On Sunday: Huracan vs. San Lorenzo; Independiente vs. Boca; Tigre vs. Olimpo; Newell’s vs. Gimnasia.
River and Boca, Argentina’s two most popular teams, are bunched in the middle of the standings. River Plate has 17 points and Boca has 16. Gimnasia and Quilmes are on the bottom of the standings with 11 points each.
