By HANNAH AL-TARABOULSY A SON has accused a hospital of negligence after his mother’s bowel cancer was misdiagnosed.
In September 2003 Irene Sharkey complained of bowel pain to her GP and was referred to Wythenshawe Hospital.
She underwent a colonoscopy under the supervision of consultant surgeon David Jones, from Lymm, and was told she had diverticular disease, which is similar to irritable bowel syndrome.
Mrs Sharkey, who lived in Timperley, was sent a letter by the hospital’s gastroenterology unit that confirmed her condition and went on to say she would not be invited to any future appointments unless further problems arose.
The grandmother-of-two carried on living with her symptoms, which included abdominal cramps, until 2006 when she was referred back to Mr Jones and a subsequent scan detected a large tumour.
Mrs Sharkey, who was married to Martin, aged 78, had surgery to remove the growth and chemotherapy at the Christie Hospital between September 2006 and November 2007.
But the cancer was so advanced the treatment failed and she died, aged 65, in February 2008.
Son Peter McLeish, of Hartley Close, said: “It was a very difficult time for our family.
“We suffered a great loss and it was a very traumatic.”
Mr Jones told the family that Mrs Sharkey had failed to respond to a letter inviting her to a follow up appointment, which she said never came through her letterbox.
As a result Mr McLeish, aged 44, approached Midlands based solicitors SV Wadsworth and Co in the hope of putting a case together against Mr Jones and the hospital, which is managed by the University Hospital of South Manchester Trust.
Expert witnesses analysed all the medical records and recommended in January 2011 that Mrs Sharkey, also mum to Janet Quilliam, aged 42, had been treated negligently and that the tumour should have been caught at an earlier stage.
A report stated: “The failure of Mr Jones to discover the lesion arose either because he did not examine the area of the colon where the tumour was sited because he did not reach that point or, without prejudice to the aforegoing, he failed to examine the site with sufficient fastidiousness.
“In all the circumstances Mr Jones failed to exercise reasonable skill and care in the conduct of the colonoscopy.”
Last week a barrister acting for the family issued court proceedings against the hospital.
Mr McLeish added: “We dealt not only with my mother’s illness but knowing in hindsight that medical experts believe my mother was treated negligently and could have been saved to continue enjoying life.”
A hospital spokesman said: “Legal proceedings have commenced in regards to the medical treatment that Mrs Sharkey received at Wythenshawe Hospital.
“The claim is in the process of being investigated and UHSM is therefore unable to comment any further at this time.”
