Regeneron, Sanofi colon cancer drug meets goal

On Monday June 6, 2011, 7:56 am EDT

NEW YORK (AP) — Drugmakers Sanofi and Regeneron Pharmaceuticals Inc. said Monday that their experimental cancer treatment Zaltrap was more effective than an older drug at slowing the progression of colorectal cancer and extending patients’ lives.

The companies tested Zaltrap on 1,226 patients who with colorectal cancer that had metastasized. All the patients had been treated with Eloxatin, an older Sanofi drug, before the start of the trial. During the trial the patients received either Zaltrap or a placebo in addition to chemotherapy.

About 30 percent of patients had already been treated with Avastin, a cancer drug made by Roche.

Zaltrap is designed to block compounds that help tumors grow new blood vessels and are involved in inflammation. Regeneron and Sanofi are also testing the drug as a primary treatment for colorectal cancer and prostate cancer.

The side effects of Zaltrap included diarrhea, fatigue, inflammation of the mucus membranes of the mouth, infections, high blood pressure, gastrointestinal pains, low white blood cell count, and high levels of protein in patients’ urine. The companies said there were more deaths related to side effects among patients who were treated with Zaltrap.

A generic version of Eloxatin is expected to reach the U.S. market in August 2012.

Sanofi is based in Paris while Regeneron is based in Tarrytown, N.Y.
