GEORGE TOWN: Students of higher learning institutions are not completely barred from politics, said Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin.
He said they could hear ceramah (political talks) or talk about politics but were not allowed to be actively involved in political campaigning. “My ministry has no problems if students want to hear ceramah or monitor elections but they should not be involved in direct campaigning or become agents of political parties,” he told reporters after launching a book entitled ‘Reaching Out… Making The Difference’ at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) here today.
He said this when asked about the possibility of students of higher learning institutions being involved in the upcoming Galas by-election in Kelantan.
The Galas seat, one of three in the Gua Musang parliamentary constituency, fell vacant with the death of assemblyman Chek Hashim Sulaima, 46, of PAS from colon cancer on Sept 27. Mohamed Khaled said there had been cases of students being actively involved in politics despite knowing that this was wrong.
“They wanted to test if the restrictions on politics in the Universities and University Colleges Act 1971 would be enforced,” he said. On Sept 28, High Court (Appellate and Special Powers) Judge Datuk Aziah Ali dismissed with costs an application by four Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) students who had wanted it to declare that the restrictions were unconstitutional. They had resorted to preventing UKM from taking action against them for allegedly having violated the restrictions during the Hulu Selangor by-election in April. — BERNAMA
