What makes a tumor in the colon 'inoperable'?
I am a writer, and one of my main characters has Stage IV colon cancer. For the course of my novel, I want her to undergo chemo first, rather than immediate surgery. Probably the best way of going about that, I figured, was to give her an inoperable tumor.
I am hell bent on making my story as realistic and educational as possible, so I could really use some help from a knowledgeable source in answering this question….
If it's location… Where in the colon would be the most likely place an 'inoperable' tumor would be found?
If it's something like where the tumor has branched to, or connected to… where in the colon would surrounding structures most likely be affected and which surrounding structures would those be?
inoperable could mean the size of the tumor, the cell configuration, , the persons age, general health of the individual
stage 4 means its metastasized (spread) to the bladder, kidney, prostate (if a man) uterus and or ovaries if a woman) stomach, bone ,brain ..etc
I think they are all operable in the colon . Stage 4 is when they have spread to somewhere like the liver, and are too large to remove. This is pretty unlikely for someone in their 40s.
Why not write a happy story instead.
Often they will not operate on stage IV cancer if the metastases are widespread or if the cancer is high grade (has a high proliferation rate). The liver is a favoured site for metastatic colon cancer.
Speaking as one who has had part of the transverse colon, the ascending colon, the ileocecal valve and a foot of terminal ileum removed in a procedure known as a "right hemicolectomy", I can assure you that colon tumors are seldom considered inoperable, especially if your protagonist is only in her 40's. Sorry.
Liver metastases are often considered inoperable if they have wrapped around, or are too close to a major artery.
