Coroner warns of alcohol dangers after Otley man found dead

A coroner this week reiterated a warning about excessive drinking after an Otley man was found dead on New Year’s Day.
Leeds coroner David Hinchliff said he was not trying to be a killjoy but wanted people to be aware of the dangers of alcohol.
His warning came at the inquest into the death of 52-year-old Edward Malcolm Grenfell, known as Malcolm, who died with an alcohol level of almost six times the legal drink-drive limit in his system.
Mr Grenfell was found on the kitchen floor of his home in Green Lane, by his sister Elizabeth Diane Kerr on January 1 with half a bottle of whisky on the table.
Mr Hinchliff’s comments came days after former Government drugs adviser, Professor David Nutt, claimed alcohol is more harmful than heroin, ecstasy and crack cocaine.
And Mr Hinchliff referred to recent inquests of two Leeds students, Matthew Wilcox and Frederick Archer-Joy who both died earlier this year after heavy drinking sessions.
Mr Wilcox, 19, drowned after falling or walking into the River Aire in Leeds in February. He was the equivalent of just over three times the drink-drive limit.
Foreign language student Mr Archer-Joy, 18, suffered a heart attack triggered solely by the amount of alcohol he had drunk.
A post-mortem examination revealed the amount of alcohol he had consumed on a night out in March was enough to put him almost five times over the drink-drive limit.
Mr Hinchliff conducted the inquests into both teenagers, and recording a verdict of death by misadventure for Mr Grenfell, he said: “The reason I go on about this alcohol is not to be a killjoy, it’s just very, very dangerous and drinking at that level can cause death.”
Earlier, the Leeds Coroners Court had heard how Mr Grenfell had been seeking help for addiction to alcohol, including several detox programmes, and also suffered from hypertension.
The inquest was told how Mr Grenfell’s drinking had got worse since the death of his long-term girlfriend, who died in 2008.
Mr Grenfell, who owned the Westfield Farm Kennels and Cattery in Otley, had spoken to his two sisters on December 30 and 31 last year.
But when they tried to contact him on New Year’s Day, he could not be found and Mrs Kerr went to his house and found his body on the kitchen floor.
A post-mortem examination revealed Mr Grenfell died because of acute alcohol toxicity in his body and toxicology reports revealed he had 466mg of alcohol in his body per 100ml of blood.
The legal limit for driving is 80mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood.
Mr Hinchliff described Mr Grenfell as having an “abnormally large amount of alcohol in his system” even for a regular drinker.

As for Brookes wedding, I dont care if Peyton is there one way or the other. Her and Haley have a better friendship IMO than her and Peyton ever did.
