High ESR (ESR > 100) no other symptoms?
Hi,
I have a relative who has a high ESR level (ESR > 100) with no other real symptoms. They are aged 63. They originally went to the doctor complaining of a sore throat, which whilst this has all been ongoing is now better.
The doctor has run a series of tests with the results below, all negative and non-serious. He has said himself he is not sure what is wrong, but is sure that there is a problem. He has now arranged for a pelvic ultrasound, which will take around 5 weeks to have on the NHS.
They have been tested for:
Bence Jones Protein in urine (test for Myeloma): Negative
Chect x-ray: Negative
Kidney ultasound: Negative
Colonoscopy: Diverticulitis, hamerroids (common condition in over 60s, Hemorrhoids were removed)
In addition, they had recent work on their teeth at the dentist, nothing serious, a filling and the removal of some tooth from the gum. All of which is now healing.
My questions are:
1. Has anybody else had a similar experience, and what was the cause?
2. Can Diverticulitis cause this high an ESR reading? The doctor has not mentioned that this could be the cause, but would anybody here suspect that could be the cause?
3. Would you suspect something serious, considering the doctor is prepared for us to wait the 5-6 weeks for the next test, which is the pelvis ultrasound?
4. I know that the ESR test is a non-specific test for inflamation in the body, so what could cause a high ESR level, with no other symptoms?
