WAYNESBORO, Tenn. – Some four days after state environmentalists posted signs warning locals to stay away from Beech Creek, a Vanderbilt professor and researcher is reassuring folks in the nearby community, that bears the same name, there is no scientific proof that links exposure to mercury to cancer of any type.
Still folks in this tiny town, all of whom depend on well water, are taking no chances.
“I went and bought bottled water today. So, I'm strictly on bottled water,” said Brian Deese, a homeowner just a stone's throw from the creek bank. “I'm terrified of it! It's mercury!”
“Nothing but mercury,” said Adrian Butler, swishing sediment from the creek's bottom in a circular motion on Sunday.
Butler, 30, born and raised in Waynesboro, single handedly discovered the traces of mercury roughly eight weeks ago as he practiced “panning for gold” as he'll do in a matter of weeks in the East Tennessee mountains.
Butler immediately alerted authorities from the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation, or TDEC, who promptly began testing water samples for the element. Some two months later, just this past weekend in fact, TDEC posted warning signs along the perimeter of the creek, telling passersby they should — “Avoid swimming, wading or fishing in these waters.”
Many who live here will cite a recent rise in cancers of all kinds, colon most notably. But Michael Ashner, Ph.D., a professor at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, is reassuring folks in Wayne County that prolonged exposure to mercury would manifest itself, more likely, in some type of neurological disorder; brain dysfunction, in other words.
“So, most of the effects are not related to cancer,” Ashner told NewsChannel 5. “They're rather related to neuro-cognitive function, and effects directly related to brain function.”
Locals said no nearby homeowners rely on Beech Creek as a direct source for drinking water. However, everyone in this remote part of Wayne County must be on well water; and for some, that underground water source is potentially vulnerable to the mercury that, if ingested by humans, can bring deadly results once it gets into the bloodstream.
TDEC announced Monday afternoon a plan to go door-to-door, beginning Tuesday morning, to ask homeowners who live near the creek if they'd like their private well water sampled for foreign toxins. A spokeswoman also confirmed mercury was found in the creek bed of Beech Creek, though the water – so far – has shown not a trace of the element.
Ashner said mercury can be naturally occurring, placed there by Mother Nature in other words. But locals are quick to blame a shutdown-long-ago battery factory some 12 miles upstream. Ashner said that would be a plausible source, since alkaline batteries once required the component of mercury.
“It was used in the process of manufacturing these batteries,” Ashner said. “And it's not allowed in batteries anymore but there are many other sources of mercury, some of the halogen for example.”
TDEC is vowing regular, frequent mercury level checks by testing the water and the fish that call Beech Creek home.
Beech Creek is 10 to 12 miles from the Tennessee River, the body of water into which the Creek dumps. The small community of Beech Creek is roughly 15 miles from Waynesboro.
