Younger populations do not have a high risk for colorectal cancer (although it does occur, rarely). Certain things which may cause colonic symptoms in younger people are ulcerative colitis, celiac disease, crohn’s disease, irritable bowel syndrome, anal fissure, and lactose intolerance.

Keeping a log of your symptoms and seeing a GP will help sort out what the cause is.

Jill answers:

No. You shouldn’t be worried. If you diagnose yourself over the internet they can tell you you’re dying. Constipation goes along with Your Period. I have had this problem since I was 13 years old. I am now 43 yrs old, and STILL Get constipated before my period. Increase Fiber, Fluids, and Fruit in your diet 2 weeks before your period. You may also be helped by Prune Wafers, which can be found in your local health store.

Jill answers:

1. You’re pooping more or less often.
The presence of a tumor in your bowel throws things off. As your body tries to adjust to its presence, demands, and byproducts, you may experience changes in your bathroom habits. For example, let’s say a tumor is slowly growing in your colon, inhibiting the flow of solid waste. You may or may not notice that you’re defecating less often.

But if the tumor gets large enough, it may become very difficult for your poop to get by it and you’ll end up constipated. Sound like a crap shoot? (No pun intended.) The tumor may obstruct your bowel. You may notice a difference. You may get constipated.

That’s why, in general, it’s best to get regular screenings rather than rely on symptoms to alert you to the presence of the cancer.

2. Your stool is thinner than usual.
Imagine a three-lane tunnel full of cars, all driving through with a nice, steady flow. Now imagine that two big rigs decide to block the left lanes in tandem… Then they slow to a stop. Both of them. Blocking both left lanes. What do the cars do? They start filing to the right so they can get around the obstruction.

The same sort of thing happens in the bowel. Everything is flowing fine and dandy until a tumor starts to grow, causing an obstruction. As the obstruction gets bigger, the space around it gets smaller. So, as you might expect, tumors toward the “tunnel exit” tend to cause this effect of narrowed stool.

3. You have stomach cramping or bloating.

Bloating may be the result of a bowel obstruction. Cramping may be caused by constipation or diarrhea. In more advanced stages of colorectal cancer, severe abdominal cramping may be caused by the tumor perforating (poking through) the bowel wall.

4. There’s bright red blood in or on your poop.
Tumors tend to bleed. Not a whole lot and not constantly, but they do bleed. As a result, some of that blood may be found in your stool. If the tumor is in the right colon, the blood will most likely be dried and virtually invisible by the time the poop leaves the body. However, if the tumor is in the rectum or toward the end of the left colon, it may still be fresh and therefore, bright red.

5. You’ve experienced unexplained weight loss.
Many of us wouldn’t want to question unexplained weight loss. We’d just be happy to be losing weight! But, even though the prospect of losing weight without even trying may seem a blessing, it really is something to question. It’s the old “if it sounds too good to be true…” idea.

Your intestinal tract does a fine job of cleaning itself, those cleanses as they are called are nothing more than cathartics, or laxative measures and they can really mess you up. The only reason they get away with their promotions is because they are not regulated by the FDA, they use only “natural” ingredients…well guess what, most dangerous illnesses are also caused by “natural” agents. It’s all a load of BS.

The amount of weight you can lose with a colon cleanse depends on how much matter is left in your intestines. The average person has 5-20 pounds of matter, so you can lose a decent amount. I recommend Preventive Nutrition® Complete Body Cleansing Program from GNC, available for $39.99.

How does a colon cleanse help the body and how effective is it?

I am thinking of getting a colon cleanse as I have been experiencing constipation for a while now.

Jill answers:

A colon cleanse can help your body rid itself of toxins that have built up in the intestines. If you’re not eating enough fiber, which is cleansing, then your system will get backed up. Things can get clogged/stuck to the lining of your colon. You can then experience constipation, and even if you overcome the constipation, you may still have a residue of stuff stuck on the walls of the colon, causing a toxic buildup. So the colon cleanse is comprised of a combination of ingredients that will help to rid the colon of the toxic buildup. It is very effective. Some people can even lose a few pounds after going on a colon cleanse.

How long you would have to use it really depends upon which program or products you use. If I were you, I’d find a naturopathic doctor who will recommend the proper cleanse for you, as well as advise you what kind of a diet you should be consuming during and after the cleanse.

Good luck!

Diarrhea treatment….?

Yesterday morning, I woke up not feeling too great. I had typical diarrhea feeling in my stomach and stuff like that. All I ate all day was some instant rice from the microwave and a Nutri-Grain bar. Today has been similar, and I even stayed home from my two morning classes because I wanted to rest more. I’m definitely not eating enough but I’m trying to drink so I can maintain my fluids, but I’ve basically had diarrhea for the past couple of days now and I’m not sure why. I ate tons of junk food the night before I woke up feeling sick, but would it cause it to go on this long? Also, I don’t really feel that badly (other than my hunger) until the need comes (yeah I know, gross, but get over it). So what should I do? I’m a college freshman, I don’t know how I could just “go to the doctor,” and the BRAT diet is pretty hard to follow when you wake up at 9 am and walk across campus then get back at 11:20 and just want to sleep (ie they won’t be serving toast anymore at the caf). Any advice? Does this sound normal or like there might be something wrong?

PS can depression cause this? I’ve cried a lot recently, but I’m feeling over it by now…. Yeah. Thanks for listening.

If they are adults, I would say worms. What are you worming with?

If you are not worming (most people are unaware that you need to). Go to a local feed store, buy a tube of ivermectin for horses, and give them the dose according to weight.

As stated, it could be cocci, but that doesn’t affect adults usually, not enough to kill them. It sounds like worms to me.

Be sure to keep them hydrated, I have a doe that I took back from a buyer, because she was so thin, and had diarrhea, I have her on an I.V. And she is on just about every supplement and medicine I have.

If you have a goat savvy vet, I would really recommend a visit. If they are anemic, they could really use a shot of iron, but the dosing is tricky unless you know what you’re doing.

Jill answers:

We’re not that bad, really. Im a crab, and i like to think im a pretty good person.

Here’s some info about us cancerians:
Also known as the Sign of the Prophet or Teacher, Cancer is Negative in polarity (as are Taurus, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn and Pisces). The general characteristics of Negative Signs lean toward introversion and prefer to draw upon personal resources rather than look for external stimuli. Such individuals are naturally more receptive, sensitive and nurturing than are the Zodiac Signs of Positive polarity (Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius and Aquarius).

However, Negative Signs are also likely to be much more cautious, retiring and standoffish than their Positive counterparts with a tendency to keep personal feelings under tight control. Taurus is the most introverted of the Negative Signs (with Virgo a close second).

All Zodiac Signs governed by the Elements of Earth and Water are considered to be Feminine in nature. Thus, Cancer (ruled by water) is considered Feminine (as are Taurus, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn and Pisces). Feminine Signs are traditionally conceived as being more receptive and less active than their Masculine counterparts which are ruled by the Elements of Fire and Air (the Zodiac Signs of Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius and Aquarius).

Feminine Signs focus primarily on the emotional and material world with particular attention to sensitivity and depth of feeling. Feminine Signs are said to be noctural or night-oriented. Therefore, the term “feminine” should be viewed in the same light as the Yin (or dark) Polarity of the Tao.

Cancer is the natural ruler of the Fourth House of the Zodiac, commonly referred to as the “House of Family and Home” and known in Vedic Astrology as the “Subterraneous Place.” This is the field which represents the childhood home and all that such implies. It is the place of an individual’s deepest personal roots. It is also the house of tradition and the location of a person’s most intimate and ingrained nurturing. In addition, this house is the place of human ending…”from dust we come and to dust we go,” thus completing the mortal circle.

The Fourth House has been classified as the “Womb of Eternity,” where all things come into being and pass out of being at the appointed time. It is the House of Genesis and also of Nemesis. This house contains the basic and symbolic foundation of an individual…the side of a person that decorates and maintains a home, deciding what such a home will look like and how much privacy will be needed. The Fourth House also deals with matters of real estate but most importantly, it is the house where emotional memories are stored and from which an individual operates on a subconscious level.

The Fourth House is governed by the Planet Moon…not truly a “planet,” but classified as such for the purposes of continuity in the Science of Astrology.

The opposite sign to Cancer is Capricorn. From Capricorn, Cancer can learn to get things into a proper perspective and take a realistic view of life. Thus, can Cancer natives learn how to make good judgments.

Positive Traits: kind, loving, emotional, intuitive, imaginative, shrewd, cautious, protective and sympathetic.

Negative Traits: changeable, moody, over-emotional, touchy, untidy, clinging, unable to “let go,” and a tendency to wallow in self-pity.

Jill answers:

Scorpio, Pisces are the best but Taurus, Virgo are good matches as well.

Cancer seeks security and fidelity, and, although you are not above a few flirtatious peccadillos of your own, you can be deeply wounded if the one you care for betrays your trust.

With Pisces, strong imagination and instinctive intuitive powers, will enable each of them to understand the other with a minimum of trouble and misunderstandings.
When Pisces gets in a depressed mood for no reason at all, then Cancer must be prepared to pour much love and understanding to lift the Piscean spirit back up. Pisces are often inclined to depressions and drink.
A strong physical attraction is apt to be felt between them, and they each have active imaginations, although their sexual fantasies is more likely to be employed in a romantic manner.

With Scorpio, this is one of the best match. Cancer’s beliefs are a mirror of Scorpio’s, and Cancer will not give any reason for the Scorpion jealousy to blossom. Scorpio throws his/her heart and soul into a relationship and expects his/her mate to be true.
Cancer can be possessed completely by Scorpio in sexual relations, and be inspired to greater response than he/she can with any other sign. Cancer is able to express her/himself more with Scorpio.

With Taurus, it’s a winner. Cancer loves money and loyalty and Taurus loves to be looked after.
Both love home and are sentimental and need security. Cancer is moody and sensitive ,Taurus is even-going and must be careful not to slight Cancers feelings. Taurus is someone Cancer can depend on and Cancer will give Taurus the loyalty they need. Cancer wants to understand every nuance of Taurus’ personality, and will make Taurus feel like the most important thing in his/her life…and expects to receive the same back.
Vow that neither of you will be quite so stubborn if arguments rise. And watch out that this domesticated heaven never turns into some boring routine.

Canned pumpkin (not spiced pie filling!) will possibly help relieve his constipation. Only use a few tablespoons, more can cause diarrhea from the excess fiber.

Probably not, when you say “the bathroom” do you mean urinating or pooping? If you are urinating frequently you could have a urine infection which needs antibiotics. Your baby could do with staying put for a few more days really. You will know when labour starts, contractions are quite distinctive.

Try to get out of bed and keep upright to let gravity help the baby into position.

Im 37 weeks pregnant and what started out as a cold (sunny nose, itchy ears and sore throat) has progressed into nausea and diarrhea. Am I sick? or is this the beginning of labor? Ive been having stabbing pains in my pelvic area but nothing consistent.
Jill answers:

It could possibly be 2 different things. Is is cooler where you are? If so, the runny nose and sore throat could be from the weather change. With my first, my labor started as nausea and slight diarrhea. So maybe it’s just a combo? I’d just moniter yourself, if your symptoms get worse, check with your doctor. You want to kill your cold asap if it is one! Irritated bowels can cause contractions too, so perhaps you should call your doc or a nurse and ask? Take care!

Jill answers:

Hi kay, I have an ileostomy due to crohns for 21 yrs.
Have you looked into calling the national Crohns & Colitis Foundation for answers to your questions. Their HQ is out of NYC and they have a toll free number you can call M-F ( 9 am – 5 pm EST) 888.MY.GUT.PAIN (888-694-8872). It is run by professionals who are familiar with IBD (Crohns/UC). Their site is listed below. While there you can find information on surgery, diet, exercise, women’s issues, and even locate a local CCFA chapter where you can meet others like yourself in the same situation.

Also, the united ostomy association of america has a site and number you can contact as well. They are run by ostomates who have an ostomy due to CD, UC, and colon cancer.

Resection surgery outcomes will vary in each pt. Depending on their dx, age, medications if any they are on, as well as their health habits (drinking, smoking, drugs). I’ve met a few who had the reversal and wound up getting the ostomy back due to severe pouchitis or diarrhea from the j-pouch. That varies in each person too so I’d get a 2nd opinion if necessary to see if you are able to have a reversal.

Definitely call the CCFA and UOAA and request to speak with a pt. Who’s had the reversal done. It’s best to talk w/someone who’s been through it and can tell you what it’s like. Best of health to you.

Anyway, I was just wondering once I have the ileostomy takedown/reversal procedure, could the scar srill leak feces??

I just want to be prepared should it occur without warning since the few times I did have an ileostomy bag explosion, the leaking feces REALLY irritated the skin around my stoma and my skin in that area burned for many days.

Plus, I wouldn’t want that to happen should I be in a public place or in the middle of a delicate situation (if you ahem… get my drift?!)

Jill answers:

Unless your surgeon screws it up, no, their will be no leaking from the ostomy site. The part of the intestine that is sticking out is removed from the ostomy hole and reconnected to the residual colon. This means that feces will move from the ileum to colon and then exit the body via the rectum. Feces will be seperated by intestinal walls from the old ostomy site.

Jill answers:

The 7 positive lymph nodes is not a good sign. You do not tell us the depth of penetration of the primary tumor. I’m surprised your doctors did not quote statistics for you. I’m sure you must have asked your surgeon and medical oncologist. Below is some data for you. Many sets of data are available via internet searches from large numbers of studies. The average of all the studies I’ve seen with 7 positive nodes would be roughly in the 50/50 range for long term survival without recurrence. But statistics will not predict exactly what will happen in your case.

From http://www.webmd.com/colorectal-cancer/guide/treatment-stage
“Stage III colorectal cancers have spread outside the colon to one or more lymph nodes (small structures that are found throughout the body that produce and store cells that fight infection). Tumors within the colon wall which also involve the lymph nodes are classified as Dukes Stage C1, while tumors that have grown through the colon wall and have spread to one to four lymph nodes, are called Dukes Stage C2 cancers. Those tumors which have spread to more than four lymph nodes are classified as Dukes stage C3 colon cancers.
Treatment involves:
* Surgery to remove the tumor and all involved lymph nodes if possible.
* After surgery, the patient will receive chemotherapy with 5-FU and leucovorin.
* Radiation may be needed if the tumor is large and invading the tissue surrounding the colon
The five-year survival rate for Dukes C colon cancer is about 64%. Patients with one to four positive lymph nodes have a higher survival rate than people with more than five positive lymph nodes.”

From
“Stage IIIC http://www.ehow.com/about_5157598_stage-colon-cancer-prognosis.html
Stage IIIC colon cancer has an M of 0. The “T” number does not matter with Stage IIIC, as IIIC is characterized by an N number of N2. This “N” number means that the cancer is present in four or more lymph nodes near the colon.
Prognosis
According to the National Cancer Institute, based on data from its SEER database, which looked at 120,000 cases of colon cancer from 1991 and 2002, the prognosis for colon cancer is dramatically different for Stage IIIA, Stage IIIB and Stage IIIC. While 83 percent of people survive for five years after diagnosis with Stage IIIA colon cancer, 64 percent survive with Stage IIIB and 44 percent with Stage IIIC.

My brother is only 48, was healthy and strong before the colon cancer, which remained undiagnosed until it was too late, put him in the hospital to undergo two surgeries, then chemo, and then another surgery, when the chemo was withdrawn, and he had a prognosis of six weeks remaining. He is now at home, under the care of his wife and hospice. The feeding tube was withdrawn, as was the IV drip that provided him with fluids. His belly is still being pumped to keep the bowel contents contained but there is no longer a ‘bowel’ remaining. Body fluids have risen to his arms and shoulders. I don’t know what will end his life first… starvation? Respiratory failure? Heart failure? Or is there something else?

Jill answers:

I’m not really sure how knowing how high a CEA can go, but I have seen them in the ten thousands. Tumor markers are used to monitor treatment.
The median survival for stage 4 colon cancer with treatment is 2-2.5 years.

Jill answers:

If cancer is diagnosed, you’re likely to have more tests to determine whether and where the cancer has spread (metastasized), a process known as staging. This step is especially important because it helps your doctor determine the most appropriate treatment. Esophageal cancers are staged using the numbers 0 through IV. In general, the higher the number the more advanced the cancer.

Go to the link below for notes on treatment and coping skills, etc. God bless.

Stage IV Esophagus Cancer ?

Stage 4 esophageal cancer is not curable. They are giving him chemo to decrease symptoms not to try to cure him. Most people with this cancer die within 10 months.

how much time does a person have with stage 4 esophagus cancer?

My dad has been diagnosed with stage 4 cancer of the esophagus, it has spread to his upper back, in his right lung and his lymph nodes.. The doctor says it is terminal, but they have given him chemo and radiation to help shrink the tumors (the tumor in his esophagus has completely blocked his esophagus and he now has a feeding tube).. He really hasn’t told me how much time the doctor has given him, and I would like to know.. I am enjoying every minute I have with him just as if it was the last day.. What do you think??

I agree, this is a little hard to predict accurately. Stage 4 is usually the hardest type of cancer to treat, but can be cured depending on type as well as with very aggressive therapy. Anyway, that being said, based on what u wrote it could be anywhere from months to a year maybe. I don’t like to put a number on a person’s life as I have heard stories of ppl living beyond the numbers.

Helping a loved 1 w/stage 4 esophagus cancer & chemo side effects.?

My father was diagnosed with stage 4 esophagus cancer last August so almost 9 months. It’s close to a whole year of his diagnoses and his pain, strength and appetite has got a little worse. He can’t eat certain foods but craves things his body just can’t handle anymore. He’s in a lot of pain off and on which of course chemo is making it a lot tougher. Anyone who has beat, suffering or taking care of someone with this stage and type of cancer or there for any cancer, do you know what I can do to make him feel comfortable? A majority of the time his nausea and pain medications do help but there’s of course those days (you know what day’s I’m talking about) they don’t even take the edge off. Also, is there any foods you would recommend him eating? Maybe even some activity’s he can do that can help him stay busy and take his mind off things (as much as possible that is)? He has always been a busy body since I can remember and it drives him insane sitting around. Thanks in advance, it’s awful seeing someone you love so much go threw such a painful disease. Any suggestions what so ever PLEASE comment.

It is extremely hard to concentrate to read when on strong pain meds. So I recommend audio books either from a book store or the library. Talk radio is also a good way to pass time as well as surfing the web.and of course there is the TV get him all of the movie channels. I don’t know his hobbies but maybe take him shooting at a gun range or fishing. When I was sick with cancer I enjoyed going to cancer cooking– healthy eating classes and talking with other people in my shoes. Maybe there is a support group or meeting in your area–ask the local hospital.Going for a drive with spring comming would be nice maybe for Sunday afternons.

As far as pain goes he deserves ALL of the strongest hard core pain meds he can tollerate. Talk with his oncologist or regular doctor and MAKE SURE he is getting adequate pain control.

PAIN FREE LIVING IS A RIGHT NOT A PRIVELEDGE. Right now he sounds grossly under medicated. There are many excellent opiate based meds that won’t leave him drooling and spaced out. I had a chance to try most of them and found huge differences between them.

He may want to try ALL of the different ones available until he finds the right mix. Dilaudud(hydromorphone) was by far one of the best ones. It comes in 2,4,and 8mg pills and has a 2-4 hr effective window. Oxycontin(10,20,40,80,160mg) is also ok but is expensive and gets under prescribed, As well as Pure hydrocodone (2,5,10,20mg.-without the apap)

I really hope you take the time to talk with his doctor about getting his pain under control. Nothing makes me madder than when I hear about people with cancer in needless pain just becuase their physician is being selfish and only watching out for him/herself . Your father absolutely should be free to be totally addicted and hooked up on these pain meds until he dies and not be stigmatized or questioned or accused of being/becomming an”addict” a few tiny pills can make a huge difference in the life of a person in un-retractable pain and for them not to have pleanty of them available is unconscionable. I sincerely wish your dad a happy and pain free journey. Best wishes.

Jill answers:

I suggest you get to the nearest social security office to you and apply for social security/disabilty benefits. Http://www.ssa.gov/
This will get you a medicaid card and help pay for the treatments. Also contact your local American Cancer society. Http://www.cancer.org/
Also try Cancer treatment centers of America: http://www.cancercenter.com/
As long as there is life there is HOPE never let anyone tell you anything different.
