Colonoscopy Inventor Appointed to Biotech Advisory Board
KNOXVILLE, Tenn.—EDP Biotech, a Knoxville-based medical device company, announced the appointment of world-renowned physician Dr. Bergein Overholt to the company’s scientific advisory board. Dr. Overholt, one of the nation’s leading gastroenterologists, is known worldwide as the inventor of the colonoscopy, a revolutionary development in medical care and early cancer detection.
“I wanted to be a part of the advisory board because I want to help further the development of early detection of cancers,” said Dr. Overholt. “Thousands of lives are lost each year to cancer that could have been saved with early detection. Yet, for example, we know that less than 20 percent of Americans who should be screened for colon cancer through a colonoscopy actually take advantage of the procedure.”
EDP Biotech is developing a serum-based ELISA assay known as ColoMarker™ to be used in the early detection of colon cancer. As simple as a blood test, the innovative test would help physicians better identify patients most in need of follow-up detection methods such as colonoscopies.
“ColoMarker™ could have a profound impact in healthcare. It has the potential to change the way we practice medicine,” said Overholt of EDP Biotech’s project.
In addition to Dr. Overholt, EDP Biotech’s scientific advisory board will also include Dr. Herbert Fritsche, one of the world’s leading cancer biomarker experts, and Dr. John Constanzi, an internationally known oncology expert.
“We are honored to have Dr. Overholt join the other esteemed members of our Scientific Advisory Board,” said Tom Boyd, CEO of EDP Biotech Corporation. “We have gathered some of the world’s foremost experts in their respective fields to form the board.”
The board members will advise EDP Biotech on the development science of the ColoMarker product, as well as the commercialization strategy and positioning for early adoption of the process.
Dr. Overholt’s work with the invention and development of the colonoscopy earned him the Schindler Award from the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and the William Beaumont Award from the American Medical Association.
