How Do B Vitamins Boost Your Energy?

B vitamins do not work the same way caffeine or other stimulants do. That is because B vitamins don’t cause energy, as much as they aid in helping the body unlock energy.

The reason B vitamins are so important, is that they are necessary for certain brain and body functions. B vitamins in the brain not only help maintain brain cells, they are also responsible for the production of neurotransmitters, which regulate mood and carry messages through the brain. In the body, B vitamins help metabolize carbohydrates to provide the brain and body with energy.

B vitamins are so essential to us that deficiencies in them are linked with a long list of health problems, among them depression, memory loss, fatigue, and weak muscles. They are also found in a variety of natural foods. But, despite their availability and import, the majority of Americans lack a sufficient amount of B vitamins in their diets.

It is no wonder then, that the majority of Americans feel tired everyday, no matter how much rest they get. And when these tired Americans reach for a cup of coffee, they make the problem even worse by stripping their bodies of vitamins and minerals, and setting themselves up for a major crash later. These same people find that they are moody, irritable, and unable to concentrate for long periods of time.

That is because, without B vitamins, the brain and metabolism function very poorly. For energy in the body, there are two B vitamins that are extremely helpful. These are Riboflavin, or Vitamin B2, and Niacin, or Vitamin B3. Riboflavin aids the body in the production of energy, and is very important for highly active people. Niacin is required for proper metabolism of fats, carbohydrates, and protein, and is necessary for the production of digestive acids.

But B2 and B3 alone won’t do it. The other B vitamins are essential as well. Vitamin B1, thiamine, converts blood sugar to energy, while folate, another B vitamin aids in metabolism and is needed in all the body’s biological reactions. Vitamins B5 and B6, pantothenic acid and pyroxidine, each perform separate functions, such as fighting depression, stress, and diabetes, while increasing metabolism and the immune system.

Finally, vitamin B12, which is only available from animal sources, such as eggs, beef, pork, and fish, increases energy by aiding digestion and the immune system.

None of the vitamins in this group are considered to be more important than the others. For maximum energy, the B vitamins should be thought of as a complex; a group of vitamins that are all equally crucial to the function of the body and mind.
