Strength in numbers
ST. GEORGE — Southern Utah residents with a common but often private condition are meeting in St. George each month for a little extra help and support.
Several residents who have had some form of ostomy, a surgical procedure where an opening is created from an area inside the body to the outside for the discharge of body wastes, such as in a colostomy or urostomy, are meeting monthly to share thoughts, tips and just general support.
Many people who have an ostomy surgery can be uncomfortable sharing their stories and tend to keep the condition to themselves but support group members say communicating with others can be helpful.
‘It puts you at ease,’ said Washington City resident Everett Lowe. ‘When these things first happen you don’t know what you want to say or who you want to let know about it.’
Lowe, who had his surgeries four years ago, said the group has attracted a good group of people who are able to help each other through a number of issues.
Even though their ostomies are the commonality that brings them together, group members can help each other in a number of ways, he said.
‘We can talk about anything,’ he said. ‘If anyone’s got a problem we can talk about it. Sometimes we don’t even talk about ostomy.’
An ostomy is also a fairly common surgery that has affected people like President Dwight Eisenhower and Queen Mother Elizabeth of Great Britain.
The United Ostomy Association estimates that slightly more than 500,000 Americans now have some type of stoma. Another market research report stated there were 800,000 ostomy patients in the U.S. in 2000, and that the number would grow at an annual rate of 3 percent.
Many ostomies are temporary but others can be permanent, such as the one Bloomington resident Jerree Crouch had more than 50 years ago.
Crouch, 77, has lived with an ileostomy most of her life and although she is perfectly comfortable with the condition at this point, she said she remembers needing some help early on.
‘As a new person I just longed to meet other people who had the same problems I had,’ she said, describing how she started a support group for people with ileostomies in the Salt Lake City area.
In 20 years since moving to the St. George area, Crouch said she had yet to attend a meeting until the February meeting. When she attended, she found ‘nice people’ and an atmosphere where people wanted to help each other.
With a condition such as ostomy, which can sometimes come with discomfiture or embarrassment, Crouch said she felt she could lend some valuable lessons of experience to the group, and felt like it was appreciated among the other members.
