Fitzpatrick supports ‘Pledge’
Mike Fitzpatrick said Friday he is supportive of the Republicans’ "Pledge to America" and has been campaigning on several of the document’s themes in his quest to regain the 8th District Congressional seat held by Democrat Patrick Murphy.
Grasping the 21-page paper while talking to reporters and three invited residents in front of Newtown Borough Hall, Fitzpatrick said the writing includes "truly American ideas – taxing less and reducing the size of government to improve the quality of life of all Americans. These are principles for the next Congress to abide by."
He said he asked Eric Christiansen of Morrisville (a Republican), Amy McIlvaine of Bristol Borough (a Democrat), and Sheila Roddy of Newtown Township (an independent) to attend because they represent a diversity of political opinion.
"The Pledge to America represents a promise to the American people that business as usual is over," he said. "The principles contained are not partisan ideas, they are American ideas. I’ll represent all 8th District residents if I’m elected."
Unveiled Thursday by Republicans, the pledge is filled with familiar proposals to slash taxes and spending and cut down on government regulation, as well as repeal President Barack Obama’s health care law and end his stimulus program.
But it steers clear of specifics on important issues, such as how it will "put government on a path to a balanced budget." It omits the question of how to address looming shortfalls in Social Security and Medicare, instead including a vague promise: "We will make the decisions that are necessary to protect our entitlement programs."
Republicans privately debated making an agenda public, knowing it would open the party’s candidates to criticism in a campaign that has been tilting their way.
Murphy, in an e-mailed statement, panned the plan.
"Former Congressman Fitzpatrick’s agenda is nothing but micro-waved George Bush economic policies of taking care of millionaires while outsourcing American jobs and privatizing Social Security. Despite endorsing the ‘Pledge to Nowhere,’ Fitzpatrick has failed to explain how this tax giveaway to billionaires like Paris Hilton can be done without adding trillions to our deficit."

Conservative blogger Andrew Roth of the Club For Growth also took swipes.
"I want to endorse it, but it’s so milquetoast that it proves to me that these guys just aren’t ready to lead," he wrote.
Jeff McGeary, founder of the conservative Thomas Jefferson Club, a tea party group based in Newtown, called the pledge a positive step. "We hope they do follow through with it," he said Friday.
Fitzpatrick said he would hold both Republicans and Democrats accountable for implementation of these ideas.
With polls showing voters disenchanted with Obama, worried about the economy and angry at elected officials, the agenda vows to change the way Congress works, requiring every bill to cite its constitutional authority, for example, and to be made public for three days before a vote.
Fitzpatrick said reducing spending and cutting taxes has been a key part of his campaign plank.
On Friday, he agreed with the pledge’s plan to roll back federal spending to 2008 levels "with reasonable exceptions for seniors, veterans and our troops," he said.
He also reiterated his commitment to repeal the health care reform plan passed by Democrats.
Fitzpatrick called spending cuts and the repeal of health care "a fundamental difference between myself and Congressman Murphy."
"We have a very good medical system in this country," said Fitzpatrick, 47, a survivor of colon cancer. "We need to make it more affordable for all Americans."
He said the Democratic plan "didn’t strengthen the system, it makes it weaker. We need to restore the $500 billion in Medicare cuts for seniors."
