Free Lecture on Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis
Barrington, IL- Board certified gastroenterologist Ben Dolin, M.D. and board certified colorectal surgeon David Ondrula, M.D. are hosting a lecture Managing your Health: Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis. The lecture takes place Wednesday, November 10,from 6:30 – 8 p.m. in the Prairie Room at Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital, 450 West Highway 22, Barrington.
Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis are two conditions frequently referred to as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). As the name suggests, ulcerative colitis is limited to the colon (large intestine). On the other hand, Crohn’s disease can involve any part of the gastrointestinal tract, most commonly affecting the small intestine. With no medical cure, patients tend to fluctuate between periods of remission and relapse.
Surgical treatment in persons with inflammatory bowel disease varies, depending upon the disease. Ulcerative colitis is a surgically curable disease because the disease is limited to the colon. However, not so for persons with Crohn’s disease. During the lecture, Dr. Dolin and Dr. Ondrula will discuss how to cope with relapses and explain how medical and surgical options may help manage these diseases.
“We don’t know the causes of inflammatory bowel disease. There’s significant research toward a genetic predisposition to the development of IBD. However, the triggering factor for activation of the body’s immune system has yet to be identified. “ stated Dr. Ondrula.
