Your Questions About Bowel Obstruction Diet

Linda asks…

can you get a bowel obstruction from being on the atkins diet?

Jill answers:

No. I have been on the Atkins diet for almost 3 years. You can get constipated but if you add flax to your diet this will give you the fiber you need. Also you can take metamucil too. I take on a regular basis, Magnesium, calcium zinc, and potassium. These supplements keep me regular and I do not get many colds either.

For fun try this for breakfast.
Banana nut muffins

2 cups milled flax
1 cup chopped walnuts (or your nut of choice)
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 cup granulated splenda

1/3 cup cooking oil
1/2 cup davinci vanilla syrup (available at Walmart)
4 eggs
1 tbl banana extract

Mix and spray a 12 muffin pan with pam. This makes 12 perfect muffins. Bake 350 for 15 minutes.

With granular Splenda:
Per Serving: 221 Calories; 19g Fat; 8g Protein; 8g Carbohydrate; 5g Dietary Fiber; 3g Net Carbs

Wonderful tasty and takes care of the fiber we need in our diets.

Paul asks…

BOWEL OBSTRUCTION CONCERN-have a history of these?

25 years ago, I was victim to a bowel obstruction when I was 2 months pregnant with my first child. I also get kidney stones (yes, let’s complicate things)- On Tuesday I passed yet another stone- I went to the Dr. on Friday, and guess it was lunch time, as I felt very blown off. Told me that it may have been residual pain from the kidney stone (NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE)- There was a Student PA, who listened to my bowel sounds. It was very hard to hear the bowel sound on my right lower abdominal area. I kept telling the “Main DOC” that there was something wrong, this was not normal. I’ve been told more than once by Surgeons that I am always going to be prone to have bowel obstructions due to my history. I still am not feeling “right”. I plan on going to another “DR” on Monday. I have put myself on a full liquid diet, have pain pills & phenergan as needed. Any suggestions on what symtpoms I may be having. The current ones are rt. lower abdominal pain (have appendix/gallbladder out). Thanks

Jill answers:

Your question is very interesting and you seem to be thinking as a person who is responsible and caring for your health. First of all, it is important to know what type of bowel obstruction you had as a child. Second, If you get kidey stones, something need to be done about the underlying cause that is precipitating the formation of stones. Believe me a good physician knows that. No bowel sounds along with no other symptoms is not diagnostic of appendicitis. It could well be something else. It is difficut for me to tel you exactly what is wrong because I would have to ask you more that 20 or 30 questions to get a diagnostic impression and then suggest the necessary studies to pinpoint the problem. I could probably tell you what I think for what the surgeon said, but I would be doing you a diservice as your doctor did. See a good clinician who knows how to use the most important medical equipment: :the chair” to seat down and get to the root of your condition. Your kidneys, make sure you check that. You are still young. Watch your diet, weight, your blood pressure and follow your instincts, see another doctor.

Robert asks…

Do I have a bowel obstruction?

About 3 days ago I noticed a change in my bowel movements and since then I have become more and more bloated. I haven’t felt any pain but I feel a low constant bloat of pressure in my lower stomach. I know I stool to pass but all I do when I have to seriously go is diarrhea and slender stools. Sorry for the graphic descriptions but I’m concerned because I’m a healthy eating 20 year old male and I haven’t had any major change in diet. I’m not looking for the reason this happened but the best way to naturally pass this obstruction. I am ready to consult my physician because I have tried drinking water and laxatives. To me, there is definitely something in there that won’t move and I can feel it. If and when I do see the doctor, what are the procedures he might do to help pass this? Thanks

Jill answers:

What you are describing is an impaction. A piece of hard stool too large to pass; stuck in the rectal vault. Drinking lots of water and taking laxatives loosens and liquefies the stool coming down behind it, allowing you to pass the liquid stool around it, but the hard piece remains sitting tight. The best way to evacuate this is by using a enema from below (Fleets cleansing, tap water, saline) one time use found in grocery/drug stores (buy 2 just in case you need both) easy to administer by yourself. Hold the enema in as long as you can to help break up the hard stool, if need be it might be necessary to digitally remove it (use lubricant, exam glove and use fingers to break it up if reachable. For abdominal pain, vomiting or fever see a doctor.

What is the best enriched refined white bread?

I have Crohn’s Disease and I am in a flare-up with almost a complete bowel obstruction. My doctor told me to eat a low fiber diet. Does anyone know of a good enriched refined white bread – without a load of sugar?

Thanks!

Maria asks…

No Bowel Urges – What’s Wrong with me?

24/male

I stopped having bowel urges for past 3 weeks. The only time I would defecate daily is after my breakfast or first meal of the day. Usually about 30 mins after my first meal, I would have feelings of flatulence or something wanting to come out, from there I can defecate and actually have bowel movements. But I do not feel any bowel urges when this happens. And when I do defecate here, bowels are usually not much and are hard and solid. Then about usually 5 minutes after getting out of toilet, I would have feeling of flatulence and bowels trying to come out again prompting me to go back to bathroom defecate again. But bowels again be not much, but softer, looser and narrower than the first time. After I’m done, 5 minutes later, it would happen again. This would repeat itself for usually 4-5 time a day with each time the stool softer and narrower than the last. At times, the stool would even become diarrhea.

This entire situation started off 3 weeks ago after drinking a full glass of milk which was what I haven’t drank since like a year ago and followed by 2 days of constipation. Back then few years ago, I use to drink milk consistently. So I don’t know if this is a cause from lactose intolerance knowing I don’t have it back then. I’m also suspecting it to be a case of partial mild obstruction, as maybe that might explain the narrow stools and having to go several times instead of just once and maybe a cause of lacking bowel urges?

I also have a healthy diet with lots of fruits and vegetables, rarely any junk food and exercise good deal daily. I am hesistant to take any laxatives or any bowel irregularity medicine seeing how I still am getting bowel movements. But don’t want to take diarrhea medicine since that might actually stop my bowel movements.

Anyone know what could be the cause of this? And if any over the counter medicine and resolve this? I currently have no health insurance so would like to avoid the doctor unless it’s urgent or extremely necessary.

Jill answers:

Sorry about you not having health insurance. Let’s hope Obama’s bill gets past.
Anyway you could have Diverticulitus, irritel bowl syndrome,
and the only way to help it is a citricel or benifiber type product. Just until you get regular agin. Or eat six to eight pruns a day. But personally I go with the citracel
