Your Questions About Cancer Tumor Staging

Thomas asks…

Bladder cancer staging help..?

Hi I was just wondering about the staging of bladder cancer tumors. First of all I did some research and I read that stage 1 is just one small tumor unseen unless Cytoscopy etc.. Stage 2 is That means there is more than one tumor, maybe a different size, maybe two or dozens, but still a little small. The next Stage is 3. Stage 3 is serious because the tumor or tumors are now fairly large and may start to be growing through the wall of the bladder and going into other areas around the bladder. A stage 4 is very advanced. Stage 4 means that the large cancer tumor has begun to ‘shed’ smaller, microscopic cancer cells. Now my question is stage 3 and 4 tumors are
Always large enough to be seen on screening tests? Or they could be unseen? Thanks

Jill answers:

I have asked you several times where you are doing your research as you seem to get the worst, most inaccurate information.
Staging bladder cancer has nothing to do with the number of tumors or the size of them like most solid tumor cancers it has to do with invasion.
75% of bladder cancers are diagnosed at stage 0a to stage 1.
Stage 0a or 0is are noninvasive.
Stage 1 is invades into the subepithelial connective tissue.
Stage 2 invades the muscle.
It also has nothing to do with how it is diagnosed and as I and Spreedog have both told you the only way to adequately assess the bladder is with cystoscopy.
Now stop obsessing over this.

George asks…

If you have stage 4 cancer(brain tumor) how long do you have to live?

My mom was going through chemo and radiation but its wasnt helping her, the cancer was just speading more. We just found out that these are the last days of her life and i just want to spend it with her but i hurt when my girls are taking it harder than i am? I just want some kind of time frame.

Jill answers:

Ok,, here goes..Get off the computer! Go do everything with her you always wanted to do..NOW!

And make sure you tell her everything you wanted to say and even those you did not.
Love her! Like tommorrow is her last day. Because it could very well be.

I will keep you all in my prayers.

John asks…

just found out he has testicular cancer, stage 3.. & tumor is very big?

my brother in law was recently diagnosed with testicular cancer. (seminoma) just found out a week ago & already he has had surgery to remove his left testicle. his cancer has spread to his stomache & as high up as his neck. they’re saying he is in stage 3. a couple days ago the tumor he has near his stomache they thought was as big as a potato, but today got results & the doc said it is much much larger than that. he said he is very worried because it is so big so they are transferring him to City Of Hope right away & going to start chemo today. they dont seem to be givig us much hope, but we are staying strong & feel very hopeful. him & my sister have a 2 year old daughter & were planning on getting married in 3 months. im very scared & worried. my questions are, what are his chances of survival? does the fact that his tumor is so big decrease his chance? how effective is chemotherapy? how likely is it that he can beat this if he fights as hard as he can even though he is stage 3 already? & anything else anyone can tell me is appreciated.

Jill answers:

There must be something important you are leaving out here.
There is no reason doctors would give little hope for a cancer that has a very high cure rate and very unusual to transfer him to City of Hope when patients have to be accepted first.
The only thing I can think of is he must have a high tumor burden, but even at that there is no reason not to be hopeful.
Check out Lance Armstrong’s website this is the same kind of testicular cancer he had.

Mary asks…

stage 4 lung cancer is a tumor different than cancer?

My friends mom was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer and she is being very vague with her about the information she is giving about the cancer. she told her that she had the fluid drained from her lungs and there was no cancer cells in the fluid, but she says they doctors are more worried about the “tumor” than that actual cancer, so my question is, are the “tumor” and the “cancer” two different things?
can you use layman’s terms please? im medically illiterate

Jill answers:

The tumor is the cancer. Stage 4 means it has spread to a distant site and is not curable.

Paul asks…

questions about brain cancer/tumor?

when you have brain cancer/tumor, how many stages are there? and if you are on your final stage, how much time do you have left? could it possibly kill you within 1 month? what kind of pains would you have? what are some symptoms? & lastly, could it happen to somebody who is 20 years old?

please don’t answer if you have something stupid to say.
this isnt about me, i needed this info to write a story for my drama class.

Jill answers:

Well….I don’t normally believe in helping other people do their homework but I’ll make an exception this time only because I have brain cancer.

The stages are usually 4. Regardless of brain tumor or cancer. There are also “grades” of cancer. There is also benign and malignant and benign malignant. Benign is of course pretty much no big deal. Malignant is a very big deal and usually ends in death. I have the benign malignant.

Benign malignant has been explained to me (by some of the best docs in the country) as having benign tumors in areas that are considered malignant or inoperable. That is what I have. I had surgery on my tumors 3 times. They got what they could but the rest are considered inoperable due to the location. The tumors themselves are benign but the location is malignant.

As for how long it takes it depends on the location(s) of the tumors. You have the glioblastomas, astrocytomas, meningiomas, etc. The glios and astros are the most aggressive and are usually fatal within 5 years of diagnosis, regardless of treatment intervention.

I have multiple meningiomas that have invaded my skull base, all 4 of my sinus areas, is wrapped around my carotid artery and left optic nerve and is fused into the bones in the left side of my face.

If you need more info I would contact the ABTA for more information. They have all the info you need to help you with your paper.

As for the age, I’ve seen very little children (age 3) have brain cancer. There is nothing worse in this world than a child with any type of cancer or illness.

If you are going to do this paper, make sure you do it well. You could very well save lives.
