Cancerous Moles?
Let me start off by saying, I have this fear of doctors and such. [i had a very bad hospital experience when i was young..] but it looks like i have these weird moles on my one arm. This one arm got burnt pretty bad in may…and now im noticing that they look weird. They have slightly weird shapes [not as bad as the pictures ive seen] Some are slightly darker on the inside…Are they cancerous??? And i REALLY don’t want to go to the doctors to find out. No one in my family has ever gotton it. And i normally am very careful about getting burned and such…it was that one time. Ummm..is there any advice or anything for me? Any way to tell if their bad? Does it hurt getting them removed. Because their more like freckles then moles. They don’t come out of the skin you know???

Yes, its right in the area thats burned. The colours are only light brown to darkish brown.

Freckles are small, flat, pigmented spots on your skin. They vary in color from red to tan to brown. Freckles are not present at birth. Instead, they develop in childhood and in later years as a result of repeated sun exposure. Freckles occur primarily in sun-exposed areas of your body, such as your nose and shoulders.

Is it safe to remove cancerous moles by laser?
I’m not sure if my moles are cancerous. I have 2 dark brown raised moles about the size of the tip of a pen. I’ve had them for many years and they’re getting bigger. I wanna remove them. Is it safe to remove them by laser if they are cancerous?

Over the last year and a half my mole on my stomach has become lighter, and black spots have apperied in it, almost like blackheads. My anatomy and physiology teacher told me too get it looked at because she had one that looked the same way, and it turned out to be melonoma. That’s a way to get my attention, if indeed it is melonoma, should I quit smoking for the risk of other cancers.

Well, stopping smoking to avoid lung cancer is not a bad idea- but it’s not the same thing as a melanoma. Melanomas are more closely related to exposure to sunlight- specifically sun damage done by tanning, and being out in the sun without a sunscreen on. It is certainly worth having the mole removed and examined, since changes in a moles appearance are the first clue that something is going on. That said, skin cancers are usually pretty restricted to the immediate area, and easily removed. While there are versions of skin cancer that are pretty nasty, they are particularly rare and usually from chemical exposures. Most skin cancers are slow growing and non-invasive, and don’t spread throughout the body as other types do. The best thing you could do is go see the doctor, and have it removed. Then the worry is off your head, and you can always speak to the doctor about assistance quiting smoking as well. Tackle one problem at a time, and don’t panic in between. It may just be an ugly mole, and you won’t miss it anyway.

How soon after a really bad sunburn will cancerous moles be evident on the skin?
I’m 22 years old and this is my second really bad burn I’ve ever had, having received my first one when I was 19 (I never got burned as a child). I got this last one about five days ago, when I stupidly went “sunbathing.” I am also very light skinned, and burn easily. That being said, I seldom go out in the sun (and when I do, I’m usually well covered). Is it possible for me to have developed cancerous moles already, just one week after having gotten so badly burned?
Skin cancer does not run in my family, although I am susceptible to getting freckles from the sun. I also have dark hair and dark eyes, if that makes a difference.

It probably would take more than 1 or two sunburns and more than a few days, months, or weeks to have developed cancer. Although it can develop on anyone, whether you actually burn or not.
But a cancerous mole isn’t just going to pop up and be “evident” a week after a burn…they will take a long time to develop, and really you should only be concerned if you notice that an existing mole has changed suddenly.
If it was cancerous, you might notice uneven edges (asymmetrical), the color may get dramatically darker, it may start to raise up and get bumpy whereas before it was flat…all of those can be signs. But also cancer can be in moles that don’t show those signs. If you see one that concerns you, let your doctor know about it and they will be able to tell or give you a test.
