Your Questions About Colitis In Dogs

Joseph asks…

how dangerous is colitis in dogs?

we took my dog to the vet and they said he has colitis! is that treatable? and how long will he have to stay there?

Jill answers:

Colitis can be bad if not treated, he is in the best place for him. Every case is a little different as far as how long they are at the vet. Once your dog starts eating they will more then likely send him home. Just keep in mind he is in the est place right now and I will cross my fingers for him!

William asks…

What causes Colitis in dogs?Dog has bloody diarrhea.?

Took to vet this morning.

Jill answers:

Like any illness, there are a number of causes. It could be nutritional, or your dog could have eaten something inappropriate, causing trauma to the gut. Or, your dog could have a congenital predisposition for this condition. Colitis can also be secondary to other underlying illnesses.

Your vet could give you a longer list of possible causes that I, but more importantly, they could give you a more likely cause for your dog’s specific situation. Since we are neither vets, nor have examined your dog, no one on here can know what has caused this.

Aside from all of this, it isn’t always necessary to know the cause of something generalised like this in order to treat it. When examining your dog, your vet will have asked you a series of questions like ‘how long has this been going on for’ that type of thing – this is all aimed at looking for obvious causes of the illness, but failing finding an obvious cause does not stop the illness being successfully treated. If your concern is avoiding a reoccurence of this illness, your vet is also the best person to help you with this.

Mark asks…

Colitis in dogs… please help my doggie!?

My dog has colitis. She is going to be 10 (human years) in february 2009. She has had colitis since she was about 5 or 6, from what I remember. She has “episodes” where she paces up, down, and around our house for about 1-3 days out of a month. She hunches over and just runs around. Our vet already knows about the problem; he is the one that told us about it. She takes pills (metronidazole, biomox, etc.) about every other day to keep it under control. If you know anything about colitis in dogs, please answer. If you are a vet or work with dogs a lot (not just owning a dog, like a dog hospital), please help me.

Another thing: She has been in the middle of an “episode” since about Monday afternoon, and she started to stop about Thursday afternoon. She started pacing again that evening. This is probably the longest she has ever “paced”.

PLEASE HELP ME, NOT JUST TO HELP HUMANS, BUT MY DOG, AND OTHER DOG OWNERS ON THE SITE.

Jill answers:

Have you tried adding plain canned pumpkin to her diet? A small dog would get a heaping teaspoon 3 times a day (Tablespoon for large dog). Most dogs like the taste and will eat it readily. Adding fiber can be very beneficial to a dog with colitis. Also feeding a hypo-allergenic food and not giving treats or table scraps is important. Since your vet has decided treat your dog with antibiotics longterm which destroy good bacteria right along with the bad, I would imagine that you should be supplementing with a beneficial bacteria. I don’t know if yogurt would cause a problem with your dog having colitis so I would go with a product called Benebac which is sold at Petsmart and keep him on the beneficial bacteria. You can also get powdered beneficial bacteria at healthfood stores. The ones that are kept refrigerated are best.

Chris asks…

Anyone have experience with Colitis in dogs?

I have a one year old Great Dane that has had chronic stomach issues for months now. Nothing I’ve tried has eliminated the problem and I’ve spent almost $1000 at the vet’s and haven’t found a solution that will work yet. His symptoms are intermittent loose stools, lack of appetite and weight loss. Some days he eats and poops normally and then he goes through phases for a few days where he doesn’t want to eat much and wakes me up in the night to go out.

I have wormed him (with Pyrantel pamoate) and treated him for whip worms (with Ivermectin) just in case, but he’s had 3 negative fecal samples done at the vet’s advice so I really don’t think there is any chance that it is parasites. He had a blood work up that came back normal. Then the vet did another blood panel to test for Pancreatitis which also came back normal. The vet then said he thought it was Colitis and sold me Hill’s WD prescription dog food. The first ingredient in this food is corn and it just made my dog poop 5 x more than he normally does and he seemed to lose more weight. I hate to act like I know better than a vet, but the WD formula is used for dogs that need to lose weight. My dog is already extremely skinny and not eating well. That doesn’t make sense to me to give a skinny dog a diet formula. The vet said he was prescribing it because Colitis can be helped by a high fiber diet. Does anyone know of a good way to add fiber to the diet other than the prescription food? I have my dog on Blue Buffalo Salmon and Potato formula right now. He seems to have gained a pound or two back, but he’s still having stomach issues. He’s developing bumps on his muzzle also so now I’m wondering if he’s having a reaction to something in that food. Does anyone have experience with Colitis or anything like this with their dogs? I’m open to any thoughts or suggestions. Thanks!
@Shelter Puppies Rule – I did have him on a raw diet for 3-4 months. My other dogs did wonderfully on it, but my Dane still had stomach issues and it was difficult to get him to eat enough so he did not gain any weight.

Jill answers:

Oh yeah. You are worried sick youself, ready to pull your hair out…confused and overwhelmed….

My dog had loose, cow patty stools with a lot of mucous. She ate fine. It took us almost a year to get it under control.

Started with womings, rice and chicken diet to rest bowels, other meds, weight loss, different foods…

My vet put her on Flagyl and it helped. But when we tried to decrease dosage, yucky mucky stools again. She said she thought a RX diet, but when I read the ingredients I just didn’t want to do it….most had ethoxyquin.

I finally decided to try to find a dog food that had “novel protein, novel carb” and the fewest ingredients. I chose Natural Balance Duck and Potato kibble.

Kept her on Flagyl at the same time. About every three weeks would ever so slightly decrease dosage. I don’t have my notes handy, but my dog was probably on Flagyl about 6 months or so.

Here, two years later she is fine. She gets NOTHING but Natural Balance.

She has only had one day of flare up, and that was the day after she was playing fetch with a stick and had chewed it and ingested some of the wood.

But I can not say this would work for you.

Ken asks…

Colitis in dogs?

My 5 yr old Pom is a vegetarian dog.For the past month, he screams when he has a bowel movement. All other times he is a normal active dog.The vet says its colitis and has given some pain reducers and stool softeners but it doesnt help much. Can anyone help my poor dog??

Jill answers:

If he is not being fed a veggie dog food then you making him a vegan dog can seriously hurt his health, dogs are carnivores and we should not put our social issues on them. My friend is a vegan but her dogs are def. Not. Dogs need meat to be healthy. But PURE pumpkin can help and more fat/oils. Whatever you are feeding him is not good or he would not be in this problems so please talk to a Holistic pet person/vet for a better diet. We are lucky to have a great Holistic petstore near to us with very helpful people.
