What should I expect after surgery?
My dad is going in for surgery to have his colon removed. He will have a bag on the outside.

I had colon surgery , had the colostomy bag for 4 months, then had the reconnection surgery. Have been taking stool softeners twice a day for several months now. I don’t like laxatives, but the softerners work well for me. What’s the danger if any. Serious answers only, please!!

My uncle has been on them prescribed for like 12 years because of medical reasons. I’d imagine not unless they have addictive properties.

Colon Cancer question: info please…?
A freind of my sister was just diagnosed with colon cancer. She is only 22 years old. She had the cancer removed, but after further test they said that she’ll have to have the entire colon removed because it spread to the colon walls.
What quality of life can she expect after the surgery? I know she’ll most likely have to have a bag for waste right? She has a 2 year old boy and wants to just give up on life and die. I haven’t seen her yet, but my sister talks to her alot. I feel she should want to stay around for her son, but I don’t know much about this kind of stuff. Also I don’t know what to say to her when I do see her. Any advice would be great. thanks.
She doesn’t even want to try the sugery, she wants to just die. But I feel bad for her baby to! My sister agrees with her! I’m trying to figure this out. I feel bad for her and her boy.

She needs a friend right now. Don’t treat her any different than anyone else! I hated that when people did that to me. She will go through different stages while trying to grapple with this. Her doctor(s) will help her to understand what she will need and what she can expect. There is no reason why she couldn’t lead a normal life after the surgery. It also sounds like your sister is doing more harm than good. Some friend!

In 2005 she got surgery for colon cancer. Got a colostomy bag, all’s been fine since. Results from her CEA blood test were 100. The normal number is between zero and THREE. She has no symptoms, but what are the chances she has cancer..?

This is something that should be explained by her oncologist. CEA is a tumor marker used to monitor treatment, a CEA of 100 is an indication of cancer, but it needs to be correlated with all other test results.
