I had a colonoscopy and a barium swallow the other day. The colonoscopy results came back fine but they haven’t told me about the barium swallow. They had me do extra pictures and it made me concerned. They took extra images of the small intestine. What are some possible problems? I am only 19 but I do have a history of cancer.

The Barium works as an contrasting agent so the Fluroroscope can trace movement of the Barium when you swallow to detect any problem. X-rays may also be taken that can reveal ulcers,tumors, areas of swelling, inflammation and any fistulas(abnormal connections between organs). I assume that full evaluation of your digestion tract is being studied before making a report. I am sure you will learn the results of the Barium swallow very soon.

I have to prepare for a test that’s kinda like a colonoscopy tomorrow clear liquids only can I drink soy milk?
On monday I’m having this test where you have to swallow this pill and they hook this thing up to you and it takes pictures of the pill as it travels through your digestive system. I have to go on the “all clear liquid” diet tomorrow to prepare, as I also clean out with that stuff called “Golytely”. First of all, has anyone had to drink that stuff? How does it taste? You have to drink SO much of it! And then second of all, can I drink soy milk tomorrow? It says ensure is ok so why wouldn’t soy milk be? Well it does say somewhere no dairy or milk but doesn’t that just mean cow’s milk?

I don’t really understand the procedure that you are talking about. Are you having a barium enema or a colonoscopy? A colonoscopy is a tiny camera at the end of a device that will be inserted into your colon (large intestine) through your rectal canal. You are given the Go lytely to cleanse your digestive system. I have been told that it is not pleasant tasting, you have to drink so much of it. The secrtet is to drink it cold, and you must drink the total amount that is recommended, otherwise they will cancel the test, and you will have to go through the entire preparation again. As for soy milk, the answer is no. If you have been instructed to adhere to a “clear liquid” diet tomorrow, that’s exactly what it means. Clear liquids are: apple juice, clear soda drinks such as ginger ale or 7-up, sprite, jello, clear broth (no noodles), water, clear tea (with only sugar, lemon — no milk or cream), popsicles, ice. This means NO soy milk, ensure or dairy products of any kind. Your digestive tract must be clear of all by products of digestion in order for the test to be run. — Hope this helps.

Can a Colonoscopy be videotaped?
I want my Colonoscopy videotaped but my Dr says he can’t. Can it be? Or does he just have old equipment. I really want to see what he saw and pictures won’t do it for me. Should I find a Dr who does?

It’s certainly possible, it just involves connecting up the equipment properly to make the recording. Most doctors are not set up to accomplish this easily because there’s not much call for it. Your doctor probably doesn’t have the equipment or experience to do this. Even a doctor with the most modern equipment would not be set up to accomplish this easily.
You could probably find someone to do it, but it would probably be more expensive, and you might get someone who has more experience with medical documentaries than making a diagnosis, and they might want rights to publish the recording.

Why can’t gastroenterologists come up with a test that requires less prep than the colonoscopy? It’s backward?
The prep for a colonoscopy is egregious. Why can’t doctors come up with a blood test similar to the PSA for colon cancer? There has to be a better way than to have to go through a prep where you literally have a 24 hour waterfall coming out of you right until the very second you finally are given the colonoscopy itself. Even the virtual colonoscopy requires the waterfall prep. Why haven’t they been able to perfect the pill camera that you swallow that does the colonoscopy without any prep needed by taking pictures in your large intestine? It’s criminal that they’ve made the 24 hour colon regurgitation the only way to do this procedure. It’s a method that’s at least 60 years old and has never been refined. It’s a disgrace beyond belief and unbelievably degrading.
Are you serious about them having better tests but keeping them secret because the colonoscopy is a money maker or not? I don’t understand the (sarcasm!!! but I am sure all the conspiracy people will believe it true) remark. It is true that they don’t stop the torture of that procedure because it is such a money maker for the doctors. It’s not sarcasm. It’s the truth.
