I don’t criticize because you don’t feed an ultra premium brand. I’ll address your concerns, though:

1. Saying you can’t afford good food is BS, in my opinion. I feed California Naturals and it costs nearly twice as much per bag as Pedigree, but I use 1/4 as much, making it HALF as expensive to feed. Many of the premium brands actually come out to be cheaper if you take the time to do a cost analysis.

2. Nothing in the food I feed is toxic, it’s ingredients are Lamb, Brown Rice, White Rice, and vitamins and minerals. I don’t know of a single super premium that puts in “toxic” ingredients.

3. My dogs don’t get a 35% protein food, and they eat what is considered a holistic, ultra-premium brand. The protein content of the food my dogs eat is a healthy, normal, 21%.

4. I agree with you that too much protein is not good for inactive dogs. Some people who feed the high protein foods swear that their dogs are doing better than ever before, though…it may have more to do with quality of ingredients than with protein levels in any case. These foods aren’t full of garbage like 4D meats and chemicals like many of the cheap brands.

5. I think every developed country has some great food brands for someone who is willing to investigate and shop around. Many brands are available internationally.

I feed the Natura foods at my house because of allergies. I had my dogs on Purina Dog Chow years ago…one of my dogs stunk so bad, it was just oozing out of his pores…no matter how much we bathed him, he stunk. His eyes were glazing over with what looked like cataracts, and he had constant ear infections and allergy problems…he was lethargic, and we seriously thought he’d be dead by now. I have another dog with allergies and she suffered frequent urinary issues (like painful crystals in her urine-it hurt her to eliminate and there was blood in it). Another of my dogs has a sensitive stomach…EVERY food we tried him on caused vomiting and diarrhea. Since we finally found the Natura brand’s foods, My oldest has not had a single ear infection, his eyes are again clear and bright, he doesn’t smell bad anymore, and he has more energy than he has in years. Because the food balances urine pH, the little one hasn’t had infection or crystals again, and she and the old dog no longer scratch themselves 24/7 from their food allergies. The one with the bad tummy is like a normal dog now…no more throwing up, and he has solid stools. All four of them poop much less now, and that is a benefit to me! They only go to the vet now for their regular checkups…there haven’t been health issues since we switched.

I can’t believe everyone who knows about the benefits of good nutrition for humans doesn’t believe that their dog can benefit from it, too. I buy the food from a locally owned hardware store (I asked them to order it for me-they sell a ton of it, now…they told me that every one who has tried it keeps coming back for more). It’s available all through the US (where I live) and in some international locations, as well. I pay $45 after tax for a 36 pound bag. I go through 3 bags every TWO months or so, making it about $60 a month to feed 3 large breeds and a toy. If I fed Pedigree or Purina, I’d be spending $120 a month if I followed the feeding instructions on the bag. It would hardly make sense for me NOT to feed the “good stuff”.

Constipation..all information past not being able to go such as color or “casing” is irrelevant..my suggestion as a RN (I am not a doctor and in no way should you substitue my suggestion for a licensed physician) but speaking from a medical perspective and a 4 year degree in the science of nursing, I would suggest take Miralax One half capful twice a day..it is over the counter. Read warnings and instructions for allergy information. Miralax is an osmolyte aka it helps to pull water back into the bowels in order to soften stool and help with irregularity. Hope this helps.
