Your Questions About Human Colonization Of Space

Michael asks…

When will the Zambian space program commence with the human colonization of Mars?

Jill answers:

You should post this in the mythology section.

Paul asks…

Is Space Colonization Better For Human life?

Space colonization sounds good because space is huge…..But what about our water or oxygen how will we grow our crops? Were can you put(by the time space colonization is needed there will probably be like 8 billlion people) 8 billion people? would we live in stations or ships they would take yeaaars to build…..I say this is because maybe our natural resources may run out maybe a meteor will hit the earth were would we go other planets and space is the only answer i can think of

Jill answers:

Absolutely. Once in space the problems that humans need to solve will be solved much faster due to demand. These include humanity’s necessary things for life, so forget about resources. Once in space, there are no limits to size and construction methods so you could build a thousand-mile-long spaceship that is just for farming. You could farm using hydroponics. There are also nearly infinite resources for our population at the moment throughout the solar system. We could easily build enough spaceships to hold humanity, we just would need huge time lengths.

In space, there is also so much space that that factor also doesn’t matter. Here on Earth, we are already overpopulated. Once we have the technology, we could also terraform Mars, Venus and some of Jupiter’s moons for even more space. Basically literally everything about space is better than where we are now.

Mandy asks…

Space colonization and human hibernation ideas?

As mankind depopulates Earth and few people are left behind, what kind of interesting things would you do over tens of thousands of years if you were suspended in cryonic stasis to be automatically awakened periodically to see the state of the Earth as one of the remaining caretakers of the planet? What fun would you / could you have? Genetics experiements? Raising other species to sentience? Reviving extinct flora and fauna? Tremendous engineering projects? Assume a cadre of worker bots to assist.

Jill answers:

They will freeze human embryos, take them to habitable planets, then machines and robots will raise them and teach them, this is a theory I have.the future will be an amazing experience, I wish I was there.
I was thinking last night about the Carolina Parakeet which was killed off by stupid rednecks.and one day maybe they will take that stuffed bird they have and bring it back thru some process, thru taking its dna and all. Hopefully. That would be GREAT , wouldn’t it?
Peace

Ken asks…

Will human die out before space colonization beyond earth realm can begin?

Will human die out before space colonization beyond earth realm can begin?

Is it safe to say humanity biggest threat is human behavior? I’m talking about hate, jealousy, fear, greed, and stupidity. These traits of humanity are what makes government works and society function. It inspire us to create technology to win wars and brutally defeat our enemies. People say that the space program have created high tech technology we used today, but I beg to differ. All our technology are a result of past war that we have fought OR will fight. The right brothers may have created a winged lift vehicle, but it wasn’t any practical use until the military weaponized it to spy and then bomb our enemies. Rockets were invented long before world war 2, yet it was the German war machine that made people realized it’s potential. Radar was developed by various nations, not just Briton, for military application. The atom bomb was just a theory until we realized the military potential to destroy entire cities. We are creating a technology death spiral that will one day cause our own demise.

I keep hearing about comets or asteroids will one day hit earth, or global warming will change the climate dramatically that earth will be inhabitable. Even Steven Hawkings thinks that Alien can one day harm humanity. There’s a probability that all that might happen, but the most likely threat to humanity is our own self destructing behavior resulting in a strong division within the world. Humanity is tribalistic, we divide ourselves into groups called race, nationality, ethnicities, and among other things such as gender, politics, religion, and family. When we are not at war with one or more type of groups, we are at war with other single individual, even with our own selves.

The weaponization of space by country such as America, Russia, China, and other nations that has the ability to send satellite into space has happened. Human started with weaponization of the ground as early as the cave man. Than we weaponized the sea with ships. Then we weaponized the air with plane. Anyone with a military background would know that the high ground will always provide the best advantages. Space would only be the next logical step. Treaties that bans weapons into space won’t stop nation from developing weapons for space. America, Russia, and China has already test fire missile to hit their own satellite in space successfully, but neither admits any military intention. Chinese and Russian space program can be seen as a threat to America and other nations security and vise versa. Every nations military mentality is to prepare for war, even during time of stability. Nuclear weapons is a very powerful weapon to destroy an entire region in the world. Currently it’s more of a political weapon because of the Mutual Assure Destruction that will result from such use of weapon. If a Star War type program is implemented, even as a strictly defensive system, other nation will have to follow suit because the nation with a defense against nuclear weapons has the advantage and the will to use them.

So to conclude this, my questions are:

1) Are we as human heading towards a technological death spiral that can only end in doomed?

2) Is it naive to say space will never be used as a battlefield?

3) Is it logical to say that all intellectual beings beyond earth have these same human trait of motivations to create advance technology? It’s seems all living organism are naturally violent in a way that resulted in a food chain, even bacteria and virus feed off other living cells. This behavior is a mechanism for all organism to survive. Without this mechanism, any living organism would have died long ago. Therefore, is it naive to even think aliens are peaceful when no living thing on earth is? How would this species survived during it’s early stage of evolution?

4) Is it logically to say that all intellectual beings in the universe would have died by their own technological creation, thus creating an intellectual barrier in which all intellectual beings can evolve to a certain point before they start creating technology that will be used to destroy themselves?

5) Do you think humanity deserve to be extinct? If humans are able to live beyond earth limits, our own self-destructive behavior will follow us where ever we go. We will use up and destroy the resources of the new planet that we will be living in. Then we will over populated it as we do with Earth. Thus we end up pullulating another planet. So why would we colonize other planet just to continue human destructive behavior?

By the way, I bet one person will make this into a Democrat vs Republican comment. This is way too common in every board, especially in a yahoo forum. When will people realizes both Democrats and Republican are retarded and no politician is working for your interest.

Jill answers:

Excellent reasoning and a good example of what independent thought can achieve.

The risk is very high that humanity only has a very limited time left on this planet. Even without considering cataclysmic natural disasters, you only have to look at recent human history to see that civilisations have regularly come and gone: Egyptian, Mongol, Roman, Third Reich, British, and now the USA seems to be on an inexorable slide to obscurity. The problem is that the trend indicates that the fall of nations takes a bigger and bigger bite out of the world as we move through history. A primitive tribe falling by the wayside has little effect on the world, but WW2 was a hideous event. If the cold war had ended badly we would probably be back in the stone age by now. One can fearfully but justifiably assume that the next major social upheaval may very well be sufficient to end human culture completely.

However, you have overlooked one factor. That is technology. We are on the brink of developing technology that may be capable of either stopping these devastating blows to civilisation, or which can survive it. The technology we are developing today is completely new, tremendously powerful, and noone knows (although we can guess) what it will lead to. I am talking about robotics, artificial intelligence and biotech.

When we learn to make robots that exceed us in intellect and are physically superior to us as well, it may be that these machines will effectively take over the running of this planet. Not by force or violence, but simply because they are superior, never tire, and are unencumbered by the ancestral baggage that we humans have stamped into our genes.

Humans; lazy greedy and violent by nature, will simply descent back into some low state of their own choice while the robots carry forward those traits that are the best of human nature: hard work, patience, innovation and others.

Therefore after many milennia, when organic humanity has disappeared deep into the fossil record, it will be our super-electronic descendents who will take the best of our humanity to the stars and be our ambassadors of the future.

Ironic it is to think that the aliens that our robots will meet will have no idea of the brutality, avarice and sleeze out of which those beautiful machines will have emerged so long before. We can also speculate that the aliens will themselves be robots, who long before emerged from similarly seedy ancestors.

Anyway I just wanted to add some new dimensions to your thoughts. I hope it helps.

Cheers!

Steven asks…

Ever considered androids colonization of outer space before human arrival?

And… do you fear robots freedom or people who would manipulate in their goals? Artificial intelligence is known to go in logic direction what means tendency of emotionless treatment to problems including perception of life. However computers are known to serve people which means robots are programmed and execute someones order. So how do you feel about sending androids in place of people to conquer lands in territory demanding change for further habitation? Do you support idea of such risk or you are against?
Wow. I like your insight into problem Mercury. And I like the most your last add about your attitude to technology… I believe it should be even quoted. I hope you didnt scare others from answering. Unless they count only on points instead of sharing point of view and information. I am still interested if people grow up to future changes and new challanges of upgrading technology.

Jill answers:

That is truly to ONLY way to colonize the exoplanets. (without being able to travel faster than light)

we ALREADY do this today, only we have some control of the rovers we send (with a time delay….that would increase over distance and would require the drones to be completely automated and smart)

in general I support robot freedoms (they are expensive and require financial (even civil) protection but should remain a legal extension of its owner)

the MAIN issue is not the robots…..when they become smarter than humans, the idea’s will shift to make humans that smart….. At that point we intergrate their computers into our own minds and or body, making us complete cyborgs……

Much more human and more corrupt…… Almost instantly separating cyborg from human…….

The highly intelligent and upgradable politician vs the lowly fat and controllable employee

masters vs slaves

I’ll take an implant and upgrade too, but only to join into the ranks of the cyborgs only to get deep enough to destroy them for the safety and liberty of normal human life

I am ready for the next step in evolution. But I fear that human behavior will actually be the downfall of such a change in social development

pro
human v2.0— creating gods — part 1 of 7

against
transhumanism

my fear is human greed intergated with endless intelligence and extended life with upgradable weapons attached to the leaders of the world.yet I embrase the technology

edit——
this stuff keeps me up at night and makes me consider trying computer linked neurological experiments with my cat.
