Sounds like it, have you noticed if you are going to the bathroom more/less? See a doctor, although it takes quite a while for diagnosis, good luck =) hope it isn’t more serious

Linda asks…

What are the best treatments for IBS symptoms?

I was recently diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) by my gastroenterologist. Can anyone out there who also has IBS can give me some advice as to what I can do to improve my symptoms? Do probiotics work? Fiber supplements? Something else? Any and all advice is welcomed and appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Jill answers:

Make sure you look at different foods in your diet. A lot of people have issues with gluten and it triggers IBS in a lot of people. I have celiac disease so I can’t eat gluten and I see people all the time on the celiac boards who weren’t diagnosed with celiac, but cut out gluten and found that their IBS went away completely. Dairy is a trigger for others. A friend of mine reacts to caffeine terribly. Eat as many fresh fruits and vegetables as you can.

Joseph asks…

Anyone have advice on how to help IBS symptoms?

I have been going through a heavy period of stress, and I believe my IBS has been triggered. Went do regular doc and he said he thinks that is what it is. Have appt. with GI doc in a month to make sure, but I would like to know what you went through with IBS symptoms, and also what things helped. Specifically in diet and with natural supplements maybe.

Jill answers:

I’ve had IBS for years and have it well under control. Make sure you are taking adequate fiber in your diet. My physician recommended I take a couple of teaspoons of straight bran. I used to take this as is and drink a hot beverage with it like tea or even with a cup of plain hot water. I don’t need to do that anymore. Other good sources of fiber include whole grain bread and cereals, beans, fruits, and vegetables.

Triggers for me are: excess coffee, foods that are too spicy, and foods too rich in fat content. For example I must stay away from certain restaurants that use a lot of spices. If I eat foods rich in fat content like too many potato chips, especially nuts I will pay a heavy price. Refined breads and cereals can trigger bouts of constipation. 100% whole wheat bread is easier to digest than white bread. Broccoli, onions, and cabbage have been problematic for me but if taken in moderation I’m okay. Everyone is different so you may react to other foods that I don’t have a problem with.

Severe abdominal pain, bloating, constipation, flatulence and diarrhea were [are?] common. When I speak of abdominal pain I’m talking about pain so excruciating that your stomach feels like it is being ripped out from inside.

Hormonal fluctuations seem to play a significant role in women when it comes to IBS issues. Regular exercise, abdominal hot packs, and herbal teas with smooth muscle relaxant properties (particularly medicinal strength peppermint or high volatle oil fennel, but chamomile and raspberry leaf as well) are all healthy approaches to take for reducing or preventing menstrual cramps and resultant IBS symptoms according to research.

Gas and bloating are common IBS symptoms in women, Well, they are too in men. Upper GI symptoms are not a typical part of the syndrome, though women with IBS are statistically more prone to GERD and acid reflux.

Drink six to eight glasses of plain water a day, but drink the water an hour before or after meals, not with meals.

As I mentioned earlier I was diagnosed with IBS years ago. As I learned more about the condition I was able to control it. I do not take any natural supplements. I would say that now I no longer suffer from IBS but I’m susceptible if I’m not careful.

While stress is not a cause of IBS it can, as you suspect exacerbate IBS symptoms so have your doctor recommend ways to alleviate the stress in your life.

It is good that you are seeing your GI as he will want to rule out any other possible causes. Good luck to you.

Can anyone offer any help for IBS symptoms?

I have had IBS for 5 months now, and recently I’ve been under tremendous stress, due to the loss of my job and having to move back home. Needless to say, this has caused a flare up of my symptoms. Despite the fact that I take the prescription drug Bentyl three times a day and follow an IBS diet, I still wake up every morning with abdominal cramps, gas and loose stools. Why is this happening, and how can I get relief?

Jill answers:

My husband has had ibs for 4 yrs. We’ve tried all types of diets, medications, antidepressants, etc… Recently we tried the generic of Zantac before each meal. The H2 blockers (histamine blocker) keeps the stomach from producing excess stomach acid and also calms the smooth muscle in the digestive tract. He has also tried enteric coated peppermint tablets that are a natural anti-spasmodic and soother. Both seem to be helping him quite a bit, he no longer has the lower left abdomen pain, stomach crams and diarrhea. The H2 blockers keep the stomach and intestines from producing the excess acid, gas, and bloating the minute food enters your mouth and the digestive process begins. Also, try to not eat late, drink water, and try to relieve some of the stress in your life. I hope this is helpful, it might not help everyone but it sure has helped my husband.

Sandra asks…

Can Buscopan taken for IBS symptoms cause insomnia, dizziness and/or anxiety?

Can Buscopan taken for IBS symptoms cause insomnia, dizziness and/or anxiety? Are the side effects similar to drugs such as Zantac or Omeprazole?

Jill answers:

You should tell your doctor about any odd feelings/side effects you have when taking medication. There are lots of other drugs available for IBS so you will have another option if this one isn’t agreeing with you.
