What is the difference between Lewis Structure and dot diagram?
I was just wondering if there was a difference between Lewis Structures and dot structures (sometimes also called Lewis dot structures). The only thing I know is that the dot structure has dots around elements to represent the # of electrons in the atom, but not quite sure what the Lewis structure is? Any help guys?

Lewis structure draws out the molecule. You use lines to represent bonds (electrons). Using lewis structures is much more common, quicker, and easier to do.
Dot structures show the individual electrons. Kind of tedious but good to get going I guess. You’ll have one test on them and never do them again.

What would the Lewis dot structure be for the following ions?
I’m not sure I am doing this right. If you have N^3- ion would it be the Lewis structure for N with brackets around it and 3- in the corner? or would it be N with 2 electrons around it? So confused.
I have [one dot on left, one dot on top, two dots on right and one dot on bottom of the N]^3-. Please tell me what is the right answer.
Also what about Sn^2+? How would that be written?

The negative 3 ion of nitrogen (which already has five electrons) would now have 8 electrons – a full valence shell. This would produce the Lewis structure having 8 electrons (8 dots) surrounding the elements symbol. That is two dots on top two on the left, two on the right and two on the bottom. Tin (Sn) is a group 14 element so it has 4 valence electrons. Forming a +2 ion means it gives up two of its valence electrons and leaves 2 there, both paired up in an s orbital. The Lewis structure for this ion would show the symbol (Sn) with 2 dots only – they must be paired together but can be placed at the top, or the bottom, or left or right. For both ions, brackets should be placed around the Lewis structure and the charge at the upper right outside of the brackets.
