Your Questions About Psyllium Poop

Susan asks…

Cat has soft poop on a wet food only diet…?

I put my cats on a wet food only diet as per the vet back in September due to all 3 of them having severe UTI’s in the past due to the dry food. They are all perfectly healthy now but I do notice that they do have wet poop more often than they used to. My one cat will have periods of very wet poop and after tons of testing at the vet, she’s perfectly healthy so I’m thinking it must be the wet food. I do notice that they do pee alot more now which makes sense and I’m thinking the wet poop makes sense too, when I tried adding some psyllium husk into their food, it gave the cat with the wet poop more solid poop but the cats with the normal poop got a bit of diarrhea and it’s impossible to only give one the psyllium cause they do tend to “share” out of each others dishes so I discontinued the psyllium use, the one cat only occasionally has soft poop now. Anyone else experience this?

Jill answers:

Hi Jonela! Fancy finding a question from you here, especially since it’s been a very long while since I’ve answered any questions.

Anyhow, the Psyllium sometimes will take some adjustment time to either firm up loose stools or soften hard stools – has both effects. If the wet food is rich, this can at times cause bowel disturbances as well. Incidentally, it isn’t uncommon for cats to defecate and urinate more frequently on a wet food diet because they are taking up more moisture content. It is an ideal diet for cats who suffer from repeated UTI’s since wet food helps increase hydration which in turn also helps with diarrhoea symptoms respectively.

Weruvia canned foods tends to be gentler on the stomach, which is what we’ve switched to a few months ago due to IBD, recurring UTI’s in each of the cats.

Charles asks…

anything to make me poop?

this cant be normal.
i like never poop. maybe once every few days, and its always just a few little marbles. my stomach always sticks out, i assume its because of this.
yesterday i had high fiber oatmeal with 10 grams of fiber, nothing.
and yogurt with fiber and probiotic, nothing.
even one ex-lax pill! and still NOTHING!
nothing EVER works!

psyllium husks, fiber, ex-lax, senna tea,
all of it does absolutely nothing.

do you think activia will work?
what are some things i can do to make me go?

Jill answers:

Do you eat a lot of fruit?
Fruit helps me go.

I have the same exact problem. My family has a bowel problem though.
You should go to a doctor to check that out. Im not too sure its healthy.
Apparently your suppose to poop three times a day, according to my grandpa:P

Chris asks…

Haven’t had a bowel movement in nearly 5 days – what to do?

I’ve tried:bran, cascara segrada, psyllium, oral laxative (prodium & metamucil), prune juice, water, exercise, coffee, oatmeal, carrots, beans, glycerin suppository, even an enema. Nothing is working and I’m feeling nauseous most of the time.
I live in a remote area of the rocky mountains and we do have a hospital in the area, but that’s where people go when they’re nearly dead, not when they can’t poop!
I’d really appreciate any advice. I am willing to try just about anything. There is a large store about an hour away, so don’t be afraid to suggest store-bought cures as well as ones that might grow wild.
Thank-you to all who will take the time to read and answer this.
Thanks folks. Since the majority of you strongly suggested that I seek medical attention, I guess I’ll head over to the hospital after I’ve had a couple hours of sleep (been working all night).
As for the suggestions re. epson salts, I forgot to add that in my list of things I’ve tried already tried too. The only things I haven’t tried are the magnesium drinks, the marijuana and the snorting of the Anacondas (or whatevers). I’m pretty sure the last two items won’t be available at the store in town!
Well, here’s hopin’ that I don’t blow up or die or puke poop (is that for real? just kill me now!).
