Your Questions About Transverse Colon Pain

Richard asks…

My Friend suffers Back Pain…Just above her Tail region 1 to 2 inches above, in the middle?

She complained about this pain 1 month ago, telling me she had pain suddenly while she wus walking, she thout its just a pain so will get okay, she ignored if for one month long, now it has gone so bad, she cant sit when the pain is worst, for the pain the doc got the xray done, but it was clear, she has worst pain in her lower back middle just above her tail region. Sometimes its very much sometimes its not tat bad, she has been given Nise, aciloc, rantac and such medications because she complained about Pain in her Transverse colon also, in front, probably due to gas, but at present day, the medicines are not effective, when she was in her 8th grade , presently in college, she tells tat she had fallen on her back from her House Roof and didnt tell anyone about the injury. some of the doc said its the same injury that has come out again.

m very much worried about her health, kindly help what could be the reason of her pain not getting okay.

will she ever get okay?

Thankyou! =(

Jill answers:

If the pain is at the sacrum as you describe she needs to see a gynocologist. Pain can be referred from pelvic region.

Donald asks…

Constipation !! I require pain pills. Problem is, the constipation makes pain radiate down both legs…?

This problem has become so bad that I absolutely minimize eating solids. All I really do is drink milk. None the less, the every third day, I get and the pain it causes is immense. I can barely move my legs until I am able to remove the constipation (I’ll be as kind to spare You these details). ANYWAY, one Doctor hypothesized it’s the build up of you-know-what, possibly somewhere in by ascending or transverse colon, that goes and pushes up against something, that pushes another thing, which ultimately pushes into my sciatic nerve. The sciatic, incidentally, is one of the biggest nerves You got and if You saw it in a dissection, it’s quite thick and visible. Thus, a very important and vulnerable nerve.

I’d like to hear back from anyone who has experienced a similar problem with constipation leading to such severe pain (sciatica) that it stops You from walking or standing up for that matter.

I hate pain pills, but I can’t seem to escape them for my osteoarthritis problems I must live with.

Thank You Sincerely for Your answer, if You care to venture sharing Your experience. Sincerely,

Jill answers:

CUT BACK on the milk, it can cause you to be consitapated. It happens to my daughter all the time. Start drinking some juice. White grape juice, prune juice, apple juice are all good for helping loosing someone up.

I would speak to a Dr. Because they can give you a special type of liquid to drink to help your system clean itself out and keep you regular. If that doesnt work then they may need to take a different step. Normally they do not want you to stay that backed up for over a month, as it can cause you medical problems.

If it is causing you to have pains down your legs then somewhere your bowels are already pushing against nerves..

William asks…

Digestive question regarding pain and discomfort….Help!?

I’ve been having problems w/abdominal pain for over a year. I’ve had tons of tests done-no doctor can figure out what’s wrong. The main issues are a feeling of fullness, like a rock that’s stuck smack dab in the center of my abdomen, a couple of inches above my belly button. The fullness usually occurs after I eat and often is at its worst several hours after I eat. The feeling of fullness doesn’t go away for HOURS! Sometimes I feel like I don’t even get hungry because I’m still so full from my last meal. Sometimes I have pain, like a gnawing sensation. I also have problems with burping a lot (I never used to!). Sometimes the feeling is directly in between where by ribs meet. But more often it’s right in the middle of my torso, about 2-3 inches above my belly button. Please, if anyone has any idea what this could be, please please give me suggestions! Is this where my pancreas is located? My transverse colon? Pancreatic duct? I have NO idea, but it’s driving me crazy!

Jill answers:

Ok I got out my old nursing school notes and here are some possibilities; HIATAL HERNIA: feels like something is stuck or feelings of fullness, GASTRIC ULCER; pain described as burning or gnawing that comes in waves. Hope that helps you out!

Sandy asks…

Mystery Diagnosis Needed: Unexplained groin, pelvic, and bone pain. Please Help!!?

31 y/o female presents with chief complaint of right groin pain which extends to midline pelvis down to inner thigh. Symptoms are generally mild until patient drives, sits, or stands 30 minutes or longer. Patient states onset has been about 3 months ago and is now progressively getting worse. No trauma or injury noted by patient. Pain is better when patient lays down on other hip, but does not completely diminish.

Patient past surgical history: Complete hysterectomy, appendectomy, cholecystectomy

Patient medical history: mild Fibromyalgia, chronic sinusitis, appendicitis, Gall bladder EF=14%, “malfunctioning uterus”, superficial blood clot (pregnancy)

Patient family medical history: Cancer (bone, blood, lung, kidney, breast), Heart attack, DVT’s, anemia, HTN, hernia

1st office visit: Dr. ordered venous duplex and x-ray of right hip after ruling out hernia.

After both tests came back normal, Dr. ordered CT scan with contrast of abdomen/pelvis…results were pseudo finding of transverse ascending colon inflammation consistent with colitis.

After reviewing results of CT, physician had patient trial an oral steroid (Medrol Dose Pack) Patient’s symptoms became intensley worse on this medication. Initially, the upper groin/pelvic pain got better, but entire right hip “was on fire” where the patient stated that she couldn’t even stand having anything touch it including her underwear. As the medication gradually decreased the original symptoms returned at a gradual pace and the “fire” in her hip lessened as the medication dosage lessened.

2nd office visit: Due to the worsening effect from the Medrol, physician did pelvic exam and noted severe bone pain located at the top right of patients vaginal wall. Patient stated that there has been a dull ache there at all times since Feb 2009 and was made worse with sexual intercourse but hadn’t thought of that earlier. (no history of STD’s)

Pysician ordered full pelvic x-ray, basic lab workup, and MRI’s of hip and pelvis…all were negative.

Patient was sent to have a nerve conduction test and EMG…both negative.

Patient’s pain is presently worsening and she is now unable to drive longer than 10 minutes if pain was previously aggrivated and 20 minutes if not. Dull pain is continuously present but is made excrutiating when putting pressure on the pelvic bone itself. Pain seems to be worst in groin, vaginal, and bottom of the buttocks areas.

Things ruled out already: DVT, Hernia, bone infection, visible tumor, nerve entrapment, spinal and/or disc problems, arthritis, and referred pain

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what this odd presentation of symptoms could be? How about a next step suggestion? We are running out of options and we are 100% positive this is not “in the patient’s head”. Any further insight and ideas are greatly appreciated! Thanks.
Pt is 5’3″ and 134 lbs and has also had complaints of fatigue for about 1 year.
Thanks Douglas, for your input. Unfortunately, this does not seem to be the issue. Was a great idea though!
Thank you Kathy. However, the oral steroid (Medrol) that was tried should have helped the pain if this was the issue. This medication is an oral substitue to a corticosteroid that is injected to relieve this type of nerve pain that isn’t fixed with manipulation. Therefore, the pt’s poor response to the Medrol trial would rule this out. Thanks again…was an interesting and great find!

Jill answers:

Have you looked further up the spine at the thoracolumbar junction? Just my 2 cents worth given you’re looking for suggestions given the odd presentation.

Mandy asks…

Had inflammatory colitis a few weeks ago and pain seems to be coming back, PLEASE HELP?

After I was in the outpatient emergency room of the RWJ Hospital, I was diagnosed with inflammatory colitis (a wall increasing in size in the right ascending colon and the transverse colon) from a CAT scan.

For about a week and a half, I started taking two antibiotics, one of them being Levaquin (750 milligrams) and the second one being Metronidazole or “Flagyl” (500 milligrams). The Metronidazole seemed to work a lot better then the Levaquin did, making it highly possible that it was a protozoa or bacterial infection. The symptoms of the inflammatory colitis I had was infectious diarrhea, trapped wind, severe stomach aches, headaches, constipation, and soreness of the anal region.

A few weeks after, I started drinking protein shakes and taking sports vitamins to gain weight. The protein shake was called RTS 51, acting as a food supplement, having 51 grams of protein in one can that I drank down all of at one time. The sports vitamins being GNC’s Mega Sports for Men, having BCAA’s (Branched Chained Amino Acids) in it, protein components, and other nutrients. I started having the stomach aches, constipation, incomplete defecation, and diarrhea a few days after.

Could this be a relapse of the previous infection, or something more serious? If not, what could it be? Should I continue taking the Metronidazole since I have some left? Please answer and best answer is ten points.

Jill answers:

This is likely a relapse of the old infection, and a relapse is moderately serious so you are not out of the clear just yet.

  • Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.
