Colon Cancer Chemotherapy Guideline

Treatment of colon cancer can be done with several options ranging from surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. Treatment can be done with a single therapy or combination therapy. However, to obtain optimal results usually performed combination therapy, for example a combination of surgery and chemotherapy or a combination of surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. Obviously this selection depends on several factors and first tests results done.

Chemotherapy in colon cancer is one of the most common therapies chosen by the experts. Chemotherapy can be done with various kind purposes, whether adjuvant, neo adjuvant or palliative. Neo-adjuvant chemotherapy is given for the purpose shrink tumor size prior to surgery, adjuvant chemotherapy given after surgery for the purpose of eliminating the remnants of cancer cells and given palliative chemotherapy if the cancer has spread or metastasized to the aim of improving quality of life of cancer patients.

The development of colon cancer treatment in relatively good compared with other types of cancer. Some types of chemotherapy drugs that are used from the beginning until now are as follows:

• 5-FU (Fluorouracil), the drug is already very long found but until now still using in combination with several new drugs that exist today.

• Irinotecan, this drug is probably better known as Campto or Camptosar. Its use in combination with other drugs such as Leucovorin (Calcium Folinat) and 5-FU (Fluorouracil) this chemo regimen known as FOLFIRI. This combination gives better results compared by using 5-FU monotherapy.

• Oxaliplatin, this drug is better known by the trade name Eloxatin. Oxaliplatin usually combined with Leucovorine and 5-FU and known as FOLFOX regimen. This chemo regimen gives better results compared with 5-FU monotherapy.

• Capecitabine, a drug known as Xeloda. Capecitabine is different from the previous choice drugs because it was given orally. Capecitabine is a pro-drug of 5-FU that after experiencing metabolism will turn into 5-FU. These drugs are usually used singly or in combination with oxaliplatin and known as XELOX regimen (Xeloda Oxaliplatin).

In addition to the above preferred drug, other drugs that are combined to chemotherapy for colon cancer is Bevacizumabs (Avastin), which is a monoclonal antibody that inhibit the supply of blood and nutrients to the needs of cancer cells or also known as VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor). Thus, cancer cells will die because there are no nutrients that can be used for cell growth.
