Has anyone else got a permanent ileostomy bag?

As a result of recurrent bowel cancer over the past 2 1/2 yrs, I have had most of my large bowel removed, part of my small bowell and now have an iliostomy bag. It is 3 months since my last operation and despite a good appetite and sleeping well my energy has not returned and I continue to be weak. It is an effort to do the least thing and I soon get breathless. I've had numerous blood tests which haven't been conclusive and the doctor says I have to accept that I may not get my full energy back. Is there anyone out there in the same situation? Have you found anything that's helped?

Just a thought—You could try a bottle of Metatone tonic.
You might just need a boost as you won't be absorbing the right vitamins now.

I recommended this to a lady who had had part of her gut removed and was feeling listless and she said it worked wonders!
She gets Vit B12 injections from her doctor every 3 months and a while after each injection, she gets run down again and finds Metatone helps her.

My 4 month old daughter has one right now and they said it was going to be permanent as she got NEC when she was in the NICU. She as well has most of her large intestine gone and much of her small as well and I just found out that she might not have it forever. So there might be hope for you as well. I wish you the best of luck. I know this isn't an answer to your question but oh well.

My friend has had a colostomy bag since 8th January 1987, it takes a while to get used to and settle down. Talk to your surgeon, they will be best able to answer any questions. My friend`s body took a while to settle down. Just be patient.

I dont have an ileostomy, but i when i was born i had hirschsprungs disease. Cos' it was of the worst kind i had to have all my large bowel removed and about 2 thirds of my small bowel. Luckily i had a great surgeon and a helpful family and together we created a method of which i dont need an ileostomy (i highly doubt this method is appropriate for you as it took many diff. methods to get something that worked. Not only this but im the only one that does it so it might not work for everyone). Im seventeen now, and so think i may be able to help you. I also often feel like i have a lack of energy, things got really bad a few and so i was put on some energy drinks. These contain alot of calories and essential vitamins and minerals. With the way the bowel is set out it can work out difficult for the body to the absorb vitamins minerals and also calories, especially if you've lost the colon (which i pressume you have considering you have an ileostomy and not a colostomy). Loosing this much bowel makes it difficult to absorb everyhting your body needs. You may find that if you havent had to change your diet much, and so are still eating alot of fruit and veg the vitamins and minerals may not be a problem, but calories still could be. I would ask your doctor if an increase in vitamins/ minerals and calories (especially) may help. I hope this helps. Good luck.

Due to bowel cancer, I had a temporary one for 8 months, which was reversed a few weeks ago. Looking after it gets easier, but it could be the emotional stress you feel over it that makes it hard for you to do things. That is something I experienced at first.

It also takes time for your body to get back to normal after so many changes. I had 3 operations, 6 months of chemo, and an ileostomy for 8 months. I was 20 when it all happened, and therefore very fit (no drink, no smoking, no drugs, went to the gym). But after all that, I still get exhausted so quickly. I walk a small distance and get breathless. I do a simple thing like doing dishes, and I feel I can't do anything else.

Maybe you just need to be patient, and hopefully it'll be better. It's only been a few weeks since my last operation, and 2 months since I finished chemo, so I'm still waiting and hoping it'll get better.
