TAMPA — The beginning of the season is in jeopardy for Joba Chamberlain after an MRI exam revealed a strained left oblique.
The reliever will play catch today, but there are no plans for him to pitch off a mound. With two weeks to go before Opening Day, it is uncertain if he will be healthy by then.
“Anytime you hear a strain, you say, that’s bad news,” Girardi said. “That’s not what you want to hear. Right now he feels good. He’s asymptomatic. He’s done tests [in the training room] and feels good. As I’ve said, throwing is different than doing tests in the training room. We’ll have to see.”

Girardi said if this was the regular season, Chamberlain would be placed on the 15-day disabled list because the team could not have a weakened bullpen for the length of time Chamberlain is not going to be able to pitch.
Nevertheless, Girardi said he believes Chamberlain has a shot to open the season with the team.
“I sure hope so,” he said. “The fact that he’s playing catch tomorrow is a good sign.”
The 25-year-old right-hander said he first felt discomfort in the area last Friday when he was pitching against the Braves. He described it as feeling like a cramp or spasm, but said he has not had pain since.
“I feel fine,” Chamberlain said. “I’ve done everything I’ve needed to do. We’d rather take a couple of days here than have to worry about it in a couple of weeks and deal with it then. I’d rather take care of it now and not have it linger throughout the year.”

The Yankees clocked him at just 85 miles per hour, and came away convinced he still is worth only a minor-league deal. Millwood turned down the Yankees’ offer of a minor-league contract this winter, hoping to get a major league deal for about $4 million.
The Yankees have veterans Freddy Garcia and Bartolo Colon in camp, fighting for the No. 4 and 5 spots in the rotation with Ivan Nova and Sergio Mitre.
Nova threw six no-hit innings in the Yankees’ 10-0 win over the Orioles last night at George M. Steinbrenner Field.
Mitre threw a 26-pitch bullpen session, and said he felt “perfect.” He did not pitch Monday after experiencing tightness in his left oblique.
