Much ado over body parts
I wonder why people attach so much superstition to human body parts. Most horror movies feature them; all dismembered and bloody. Modern cinema has countless slide shows about them.
I also haven’t met a single person yet (except for those in the medical and science professions) who wouldn’t flinch at the thought of holding a real body part (one that actually came from a live human and not those cleverly designed toys made to look real).
Case in point. I recently ‘borrowed’ a skeleton of the hand and forearm from our medical school. I used it to study the origins and insertions of the various muscles in that part of the body. One afternoon, while I was studying at my desk at the office where I work, I got up to get a soda from the canteen. When I returned, a group of my colleagues were examining the skeleton. They weren’t from the medical profession, so I could understand the curiosity. But when I explained that it wasn’t a replica but was in fact, the real deal, they all shuddered, dropped the skeleton, expressed icky-ness, and and wouldn’t go near my table.
This wasn’t an isolated case, mind you. My classmates all shared the same experience when they brought home a body part. Perhaps, it is the thought that it came from someone alive and well, or the fact that they are featured in a lot of B-rated horror movies, I don’t know. For some reason, most people are scared of body parts.
For me though, these once alive human appendages are my friends, helping me understand the human body better and ultimately, I am sure, will soon help me save a life.
