MILWAUKEE - A candidate for Lieutenant Governor in Wisconsin has opened up about her battle behind the scenes with cancer.In late August, Republican candidate Kleefisch was diagnosed and successfully treated for a cancerous tumor in her colon. She told Newsradio 620 WTMJ’s Charlie Sykes she started feeling crummy in April Kleefisch described symptoms like an upset stomach, being tired and suffering headaches.
At first Kleefisch says she thought it was just the rigorous campaign schedule so she went in, was checked and nothing major came back from the results. Kleefisch says by August, "I knew I wasn’t well anymore and I couldn’t just brush it off as the campaign."
She called her doctor again and went in for blood tests. Kleefisch says he called her back sounding alarmed. He says he asked how she was feeling and then nearly scolded her saying, "You’re losing blood, and you’ve been losing blood, and I can’t believe you’re still standing." His initial thoughts, says Kleefisch, were that she was suffering from an ulcer. But he wanted her to go in for a blood transfusion. Over the coming days Kleefisch says she had several tests done and eventually had a grapefruit sized tumor removed from her colon. It was Stage 2 cancer and about a week after finding it; it was gone. Kleefisch calls it a miracle and says she had angels around her.
The removal happened two weeks before the primary election. She is now cancer-free. Kleefisch says she didn’t come forward publicly until now because the speed of everything was fairly over-whelming. She says she now wants to give hope to others suffering from illnesses like cancer.
Kleefisch says her tests have shown no mutation in her genes meaning she won’t pass along the disease to her two daughters. "Another miracle," she says.
As for further treatment, Kleefisch says it’s too soon to know if she will need chemotherapy. In the meantime she is continuing with a full schedule of campaign events leading to the November general election.
