Pom Pon Dancers squad may return to high school
SHELTON — Members of the Shelton High School Pom Pon Dancers are not lacing up their dance shoes just yet, but they left a meeting of the Board of Education Personnel Committee Wednesday hopeful that the rest of their season can be salvaged.
Superintendent of Schools Freeman Burr said the publicity that resulted from his and Principal Beth Smith’s decision to eliminate the squad this year for lack of a qualified adviser generated interest from several prospective candidates. Two high school staffers were among those who expressed interest in assuming the supervisory role.
Burr said he would waive the interview process and appoint one or both candidates to the position of interim coach if they commit to the rehearsal and performance schedule. During the meeting, which attracted 68 people, Burr said he and Smith will approach the two internal candidates to assess their commitment. If these candidates are truly interested, the Pom Pon Dancers could potentially be reactivated soon.
“Fingers crossed,” said Becky Sheik, 17.
“It’s definitely a start. There’s hope now. Hearing it was canceled was the worst thing that could happen to the team,” said Victoria Simeone, 17.
“I’m encouraged because we’re probably going to have a coach,” said Liz Llera, 17.
Impassioned pleas for the resumption of the dance team came from a handful of people before the committee discussed the issue.
Team Captain Paige Colon, 17, a senior, told committee members that she held tryouts Wednesday for the intermediate school dance team and 82 young girls showed up, underscoring the interest in and need for the Pom Pon Dancers.
“If the football team didn’t have a qualified coach they’d find one. Where there’s a will there’s a way,” said Phoenix Matarazzo, 22, a 2006 graduate of Shelton High School and a dance major at the Hartt School, a performing arts conservatory at the University of Hartford.
“The Pom Pon Team was where I learned who I was. I am a better person today because of the bonds I made on the team and the friendships that I still have today,” former Pom Pon Dancer Kelly McDermott told the committee.
Some dancers were not convinced the process would move forward, pointing to a lawsuit by last year’s coach against the parents of two former dancers and suggesting the disbanding of the team was in retaliation for the legal problems, even though the school system and officials were not named in the suit.
The lawsuit was filed by Cathi Schneider in state Superior Court in Milford against Jacques and Bobbi Wagemaker, and David and Susan Roberts, all of Shelton.
According to a story the Huntington Herald posted on its website Wednesday, Schneider, last year’s coach, is suing the Wagemakers and the Roberts, parents of two former team members, for defamation, claiming the defendants accused her of sexually assaulting their daughters.
“The way the charges are written in the lawsuit are inflamed and untrue,” Bobbi Wagemaker said Wednesday night. She said she could not comment more specifically about the claims.
Others fear they will be told the two internal candidates are unqualified to serve as advisers.
Burr said, if that occurred, the position would be posted again.
