STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — “Be the coffee bean.”
Guest speaker and award-winning television executive Dolores N. Morris offered this life’s message to 354 graduates of Port Richmond High School during the school’s commencement today at the Spiro Center on the Grymes Hill campus of Wagner College.
A jam-packed, spirited auditorium filled with family and friends greeted the Class of 2010 as they marched into the auditorium, led by the school’s faculty and administration members.
Class salutatorian Kinza Bukhari recalled growing up as a troubled grade-schooler before entering Port Richmond, where “the school was cleaner and we had a nice pool.”
Ms. Bukhari’s address gave the Port Richmond High School chorus a nice segueway into the song “For Good,” a piece from the Broadway play “Wicked” with the lyrics – “I do believe that I have changed for the better.”
Principal Timothy M. Gannon lauded the graduates for their “countless” culinary, film, writing, journalism, sports and JROTC achievements, and for being the “top New York City high school” in donating blood to the Blood Bank.
“You weren’t always perfect … no you weren’t,” Gannon said. “But you always showed promise.”
Class valedictorian Chia Chou Pan dedicated his graduation to his father for his father’s birthday, which fell on the same day as commencement.
“I did not prepare a birthday gift,” Pan said. “My gift to you is to work harder and make you proud.”
Ms. Morris, a class of 1966 Port Richmond and current vice president of the HBO Family channel who has supervised film productions that have garnered more than 30 Emmy Awards, brought the house down with her story of a young woman who came home crying after a hard day.
Her mother asked the woman to boil water in three separate pots. Then she told her to put a carrot in one of the pots, an egg in the second, and a single coffee bean in the third pot.
The carrot was left cooked and soft. The egg was hard-boiled. But in the third pot, the coffee bean had turned the water into coffee.
“The boiling water is life,” Ms. Morris said. “The water changed the carrot. It changed the egg. But one coffee bean changed the water.
“You can change the water,” Ms. Morris told the graduates as the auditorium erupted in loud applause and chanted, “Be the coffee bean!”
