What’s A Diverticulosis Diet? Roughage, Baby!

A healthy diverticulosis diet is a reasonable eating style for anyone, but particularly those afflicted with diverticular disease.

Diverticulosis is one of the two ugly stepsisters that comprise diverticular disease. It’s the condition of having pouches or pockets in the wall of the colon. Typically diverticulosis is asymptomatic (you don’t feel anything unusual), although it may cause cramping feelings or involve other complications. When those pouches in the colon – called diverticula – become inflamed and infected, it conjures the other stepsister, diverticulitis.  That’s something you’ll definitely feel.

If a diverticulosis condition doesn’t have other complications, it can often be managed with a healthy “diverticulosis diet”. This diverticulosis diet is a set of eating habits that are based on the sound eating habits for thewhole population, but its salient feature is high fiber.

Yep, it’s that roughage your mom always told you was so good for you. It’s recommended that a normal adulteat 25-35 grams of dietary fiber daily. This is not a difficult level to reach unless one is accustomed to an overall regimen of low-fiber diet, especially featuring high quantities of red meat. Ahealthy diverticulosis diet does not restrict red meat entirely, but the meat should be just one part of an otherwise high fiber diet.

A diverticulosis diet based on a fiber intake goal of 30 grams is not difficult to maintain. Beans (baked,canned, plain) contain approximately 10 grams of fiber per cup.  Love burritos? You’re well on your way if you stuff it with pinto beans instead of carne asada. Even better, wrap it in a whole wheat tortilla if that’s not too ‘granola’ for you. A cup of oatmeal for breakfast will give you 4 grams of fiber. A half cup of raisinsstirred in will bring that number up another 3 or so. A small orange added on would bring that breakfast up to a total of about 10 grams.

Other high fiber foods in a good diverticulosis diet could include almonds (3g per oz), green beans (4g per oz), split peas (16g per cup), beets (OK, gross, I know… never mind), and bananas (3 g each).  Breakfast can be a large part of the fiber in your diverticulitis diet, as many cereals, especially bran cereals, have high fiber value. Some additional good foods to eat on a diverticulosis diet include whole wheat breads, oatmeal, bran muffins, bananas, and yes, those prunes your momma used to push on you to “keep you regular”.

The dietary changes are in most cases, not extreme except for those used to a very low fiber diet (which maywell be the cause of the diverticulosis in the first place). Some minor changes in shopping and eating habits can be the first step to a healthy diverticulosis diet, keeping sufferers of diverticulosis out of the doctor’s office, off the operating table, and symptom free.  As always, chat up your doctor to get his or her approval of this diverticulosis diet and make sure it’s right for you.
