Sharon asks…
diverticulitis, how does it occur, what causes it,how is it caused?
please explain to me how the condition diverticulitis occurs, or and develop es, what are the causes of this condition, thank you for all answers,
Could this condition/disease be deliberately caused by something being injected or inserted into the anal canal deliberately? such as a bacteria,or whatever?

Jill answers:
Diverticulitis is a condition in which diverticuli in the colon rupture. The rupture results in infection in the tissues that surround the colon.
Diverticula can occur throughout the colon but are most common near the end of the left colon called the sigmoid colon. The condition of having these diverticula in the colon is called diverticulosis
Causes:
The muscular wall of the colon grows thicker with age. Thickening of the colon wall may reflect the increasing pressures required by the colon to eliminate feces.
Constipation makes the muscles strain to move stool that is too hard. It is the main cause of increased pressure in the colon. This excess pressure might cause the weak spots in the colon to bulge out and become diverticula
The increased pressure in the colon can lead to breakdown of the wall of the diverticula leading to infection. The narrow openings of diverticula may trap fecal matter, which can lead to infection. Or, an obstruction in the narrow opening of a diverticulum may reduce blood supply to the area, which leads to inflammation.
In the past, doctors thought that nuts, seeds, popcorn and corn played a role in causing diverticulitis by getting trapped in the diverticula. However, recent research has found that these foods weren’t associated with an increased risk of diverticulitis
These factors may increase your chances of getting diverticulitis: Aging; Obesity; lack of exercise and too little fiber.
Too little Fiber-Occurs where low-fiber diets are common. The disease is rare in countries of Asia and Africa, where people eat high-fiber vegetable diets.
You’re more likely to get diverticulitis if you’re over 40.
Age-related changes, such as a decrease in strength and elasticity of your bowel wall, could contribute to diverticulitis
No, you wouldn’t get it via introduction of bacteria into the anal canal.

Carol asks…
what causes some people to get diverticulitis?
My brother has it and just had 8 inches of his colon removed. I have a dull sore pain on my left side after eating many times and am afraid I am developing it as well. Does it run in families> Am I being paranoid?

Jill answers:
Diverticulitis develops from diverticulosis, which involves the formation of pouches (diverticula) on the outside of the colon. Diverticulitis results if one of these diverticula becomes inflamed. Inflammation in the body is from an infection.
The high, indiscriminate use of antibiotics by doctors destroys the intestinal flora that is 3/4 of the immune system in the body. These intestinal flora are responsible for much of the digestion that takes place. Additionally, these flora produce butyric acid that nourishes the cells of the large intestines. The American diet is absolutely horrible and that, in combination with the drugs and antibiotics given to people, destroys much of the body’s ability to be healthy and avoid infections like that.
This is definitely a preventable disease. The high carb, low fat diets being promoted in America are simply terrible for you. The drug ALLI that was recently approved by the FDA is just another example of this insanity. If you want to avoid this type of problem, there is a very simple way to do that. Don’t listen to the so called “food experts” that are promoting bad food choices. They are nothing more than “hired guns” of the food industry’s big dollar marketing scheme. They know that people listen to “experts.”
One of the biggest misconceptions is this advertised marketing scheme for antacids. It is the lack of stomach acid that is causing acid indigestion. The words “acid indigestion” were created to make people think too much stomach acid is causing this problem, when in fact it is the LACK of STOMACH ACID causing the problem. Lactic acid from rotting, purtrefying, fermenting food due to the lack of stomach acid is causing the acid feeling. Neutralizing it just stops the digestive process, allowing a cascade of events that can lead to high BAD bacteria getting into the intestines that stomach acid normally kills. This bad bacteria wreak havoc with the intestinal flora making the production of butyric acid very low, allowing inflammation to happen. High levels of omega 6 inflammatory acids produced by hydrogenated oils, vegetable oils, processed foods like chips, etc. Promote this inflammatory response from the body. This inflammation process is how the body heals itself by bringing more blood flow to the inflamed area, but if the nutrients are not in the body to fight the infection(s), they cause all kinds of problems like IBS.
Learn to eat right and your chances of getting a disease like that or any other disease will greatly diminish. A very, very good book for you to read is: “Nourishing Traditions” by Sally Fallon and also “Life Without Bread” by Christian Allan, pH.D.
Read those books and you will gain huge knowledge that will help you all your life.
Good luck

Nancy asks…
What causes diverticulitis?
How is it treated, is it genetic at all? What care should someone with it take?

Jill answers:
Symptoms
Symptoms of diverticulitis may last from a few hours to several days. These symptoms may include:
Tenderness, cramps, or pain in the abdomen (usually in the lower left side but may occur on the right) that is sometimes worse when you move.
Fever and chills.
A bloated feeling, abdominal swelling, or gas.
Diarrhea or constipation.
Nausea and sometimes vomiting.
Loss of appetite.
Complications also can cause symptoms. If an abnormal opening (fistula) develops between the colon and the vagina or the colon and the urethra, you may pass air or stool from the vagina or the urethra.
Other conditions, such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or a urinary tract infection, may cause symptoms similar to diverticulitis. Symptoms such as rectal bleeding, a change in bowel habits, and unexplained weight loss may be signs of colon cancer. If you have any of these symptoms, contact your health professional.
Initial treatment
Treatment for diverticulitis depends on the severity of your symptoms. If the pain is mild, you are able to drink liquids, and you have no signs of complications, treatment may include:
Medications such as antibiotics and pain relievers.
Changes in diet, starting with a clear-liquid or bland diet that is low in fiber until the pain goes away, then increasing the amount of fiber.
Although some people avoid nuts, seeds, berries, and popcorn, believing that they might get trapped in the diverticula and cause pain, there is no evidence that these foods cause or worsen diverticulitis. 1
If the pain is severe, you are not able to drink liquids, or you have complications of diverticulitis, hospitalization is necessary. Treatment will include:
Receiving antibiotics in a vein (intravenous, or IV).
Receiving intravenous fluids and nutrition only (no food or drink by mouth) for up to a week to allow the bowel to rest.
Keeping the stomach empty by sucking out the contents through a tube passed up the nose and down the throat into the stomach (nasogastric or NG tube). This may be needed if you are vomiting or have abdominal swelling.
Performing surgery either for complications of diverticulitis or if you have had repeated attacks that are not helped by changing your diet. About 15% to 20% of initial attacks of diverticulitis require surgery. 3
Most cases of promptly treated diverticulitis will improve in 2 to 3 days.

Chris asks…
What is Diverticulitis? How do get this and what causes it?
Please help me this is for my grandpa!

Jill answers:
This is an inflammation of the diverticula. Diverticula are small pouches in the intestinal system. It is treated by a change in the diet. If an infection is present antibiotics will also be prescribed’
Dr.’s think the cause is not having enough fiber in the diet.

William asks…
Can someone have colon cancer symptoms but, the tumor is not cancerous?
Can someone have colon cancer symptoms, but the tumor is not cancerous? Is this possible? Please help!

Jill answers:
Yes. Proctitis causes inflamed tissue in the colon.

Thomas asks…
Could Metamucil hide colon cancer symptoms?
It’s a bulk forming laxative, and apparently the thin stool caused by an obstructive polyp is the hallmark symptom of colorectal cancer. I was wondering if the stool of someone afflicted with colon cancer would be thin anyway, even if they took a bulk forming laxative.

Jill answers:
No it can’t

Michael asks…
Does a colon polyp cause the same symptoms as colon cancer?
I am 20 years old and I feel something is wrong with my colon and I have all the symptoms that arise from colon cancer. I read that colonoscopys are given to people over 50 because people my age arent at risk or it’s rare to have colon cancer. And I was just wondering what other things are there that have the same symptoms as colon cancer?

Jill answers:
Younger populations do not have a high risk for colorectal cancer (although it does occur, rarely). Certain things which may cause colonic symptoms in younger people are ulcerative colitis, celiac disease, crohn’s disease, irritable bowel syndrome, anal fissure, and lactose intolerance.
Keeping a log of your symptoms and seeing a GP will help sort out what the cause is.

colon cancer symptoms on period HELP PLEASE?
I’ve been having this problem for awhile now and its pretty gross. It is the same symptoms of colon cancer but i only get it while im on my period. I dont know if this is colon cancer or what?
I get very consitpated but only during my period and my symptoms match exactly with the signs of colon cancer should i be worried? i have an appt on tuesday with my doctor but i just need to know to ease my mind please help

Jill answers:
No. You shouldn’t be worried. If you diagnose yourself over the internet they can tell you you’re dying. Constipation goes along with Your Period. I have had this problem since I was 13 years old. I am now 43 yrs old, and STILL Get constipated before my period. Increase Fiber, Fluids, and Fruit in your diet 2 weeks before your period. You may also be helped by Prune Wafers, which can be found in your local health store.

Paul asks…
what are some symptoms of colon cancer?
i think my husband might have colon cancer. he complains that he feels like he has go to the bathroom but doesnt need to, throws up every night, tired/weak, stomach hurts alot and little blood in toilet. could that be what it is or something else?

Jill answers:
1. You’re pooping more or less often.
The presence of a tumor in your bowel throws things off. As your body tries to adjust to its presence, demands, and byproducts, you may experience changes in your bathroom habits. For example, let’s say a tumor is slowly growing in your colon, inhibiting the flow of solid waste. You may or may not notice that you’re defecating less often.
But if the tumor gets large enough, it may become very difficult for your poop to get by it and you’ll end up constipated. Sound like a crap shoot? (No pun intended.) The tumor may obstruct your bowel. You may notice a difference. You may get constipated.
That’s why, in general, it’s best to get regular screenings rather than rely on symptoms to alert you to the presence of the cancer.
2. Your stool is thinner than usual.
Imagine a three-lane tunnel full of cars, all driving through with a nice, steady flow. Now imagine that two big rigs decide to block the left lanes in tandem… Then they slow to a stop. Both of them. Blocking both left lanes. What do the cars do? They start filing to the right so they can get around the obstruction.
The same sort of thing happens in the bowel. Everything is flowing fine and dandy until a tumor starts to grow, causing an obstruction. As the obstruction gets bigger, the space around it gets smaller. So, as you might expect, tumors toward the “tunnel exit” tend to cause this effect of narrowed stool.
3. You have stomach cramping or bloating.
Bloating may be the result of a bowel obstruction. Cramping may be caused by constipation or diarrhea. In more advanced stages of colorectal cancer, severe abdominal cramping may be caused by the tumor perforating (poking through) the bowel wall.
4. There’s bright red blood in or on your poop.
Tumors tend to bleed. Not a whole lot and not constantly, but they do bleed. As a result, some of that blood may be found in your stool. If the tumor is in the right colon, the blood will most likely be dried and virtually invisible by the time the poop leaves the body. However, if the tumor is in the rectum or toward the end of the left colon, it may still be fresh and therefore, bright red.
5. You’ve experienced unexplained weight loss.
Many of us wouldn’t want to question unexplained weight loss. We’d just be happy to be losing weight! But, even though the prospect of losing weight without even trying may seem a blessing, it really is something to question. It’s the old “if it sounds too good to be true…” idea.

does anyone else suffer from diverticulosis?
I should say diverticulitis, which is the inflamed condition of diverticulosis. It is said to be a condition that 50% of us in the western world suffer from especially over the age of 50.It is little pockets formed in the bowel and the food sometimes gets stuck in there and causes bacteria that causes inflamation and sever pain in the lower sigmoid colon.I just had a serious attack of it and thought i was dying.
dennis contact me by clicking on my face and i will give you the full details on your dads death probability.

Really bad pain, answers please!!?
17 year old female, been having moderate pain lower left abdomen that stays for a few hours and sudden stabbing pains.
Went to the ER in November, the pain was to much, vomiting, was doubled over and was advise by Dialriada to go to hospital. The ER put me on an IV for the pain. They done a stomach X-ray my colon was totally blocked with faeces, so they said my pain was caused my constipation. The doctor said that there is an underlying condition that needs treatment! I have a bowel movement at least 2 times a day, so how can I be constipated? I have been having a lot of Diarrhea lately with a burning sensation beside my thigh below my groin. Is that the Sigmoid Colon?
I have been to the gyno, all my reproductive organs are healthy, I have no STI’s, not pregnant…
The pain seems to be getting worse day by day and it is frustrating.
I get woke up at night with the pain, or cant even fall asleep, when I press on my lower stomach it hurts pretty bad.
Does anyone know what could be wrong with me? Or had these symptom’s before?
I have been to my GP loads of times, waiting to be seen by a bowel specialist.
Thanks to all in advance.

Jill answers:
The best thing to do is what you are doing – going to the specialist and being VERY descriptive about your pain. In the meantime, watch what you eat. You may be very sensitive to a certain kind of food which would cause this (for ex, I cannot eat oily or fatty foods or i get similar symptoms) you should go to the dr and be sure that nothing is wrong with your appendix…you don’t want to assume that this is constipation or a gi problem when it could be a ruptured appendix.

abdominal pain please help?
i have been having abdominal pain for a week and ahalf now.
It started with cramping then i had a dull ache on my right side of my abdomen which has gotten worse every day. i have had ct scans which just showed a thickenig of the sigmoid colon, i have had a colonoscopy which was good, also i had a edoscopy which said i had ulcers. my problem is the pain is like a heavy weight that goes from the abdomen to the flanks which gets worse when i walk around now i know ulcers dont do that. i also had diareah which lasted 3 days. can anyone help me with this? do ulcers do this? or is it my colon an infection? please help

Jill answers:
Ulcers should only cause pain around the base of your ribcage and above. You could have a thing called Irritable bowel syndrome. Its a major cause of a multitude of digestive system symptoms, can cause cramping pain as well as bloating of your tummy, diarrhea/alternating constipation where you won’t go to the toilet. A colonoscopy should have ruled out serious bowel problems like crohns disease so don’t worry too much. Do you have any other symptoms? Are you tired? Fever? Vomit/nausea?

Stomach Pain?
http://in.answers.yahoo.com/questio…
I’ve posted on here before so I am just using an old question to fill in the stuff before.
This morning I woke up && my stomach hurt so badly that all I could do was cry. I went to see my surgeon && he had me get an ultrasound && a bunch of blood work done. After I had all of that done my dad got me something to eat so that I wouldn’t get sick from my Lortab but after eating I was bent over the toliet in both ways & in so much pain that I couldn’t function.
He said that it could be Dumping syndrome, an Ulcer, or a spastic colon(i think thats what he said not totally sure)
But he didn’t really think it was the ulcer. Tomorrow (I guess it would be today- Friday) he is going to have me swallow a scope.
What else do you think it could be? && what are if it is Dumping Syndrome or spastic colon? && any idea why he doesn’t think it could be an ulcer?
I had my Gall Bladder out last Wednesday. Thats why I included the link as extra information so I wouldn’t run out of room

Jill answers:
He doesnt think its appendicisitce? That causes flu like symptoms like vomiting and dirrahea…and stomach pain. And sometimes you dont even have a fever with it. Are you having sharp pains in your abdomen? I would get a second opinion if I were you. I have ulcerative colitis…and I dont get anythng but mild cramping, I doubt it’s an ulcer. Im guessing something with your gull bladder or appendix.

Bulging disk for workman’s comp? Need solid advice…?
Hello all.Was wondering if I am able to get workman’s compensation for a bulging disk in the L3-L4 region of my back.I’m a TRUCKER and first started noticing the pain about 3 months ago.Been driving for about 5 1/2 years straight with only 4 days off a month,if that.
I was actually getting 2 CT scans due to pain in my front left area which I was thinking more of a ulcer or colon issue. My gastrologist said the CT scans came back with no issues in the colon and stomach area but did notice I have a bulging disk.I filed for workman’s comp with Liberty Mutual but have NOT heard anything back yet!? I’ve been out of work for 2 weeks now because I can not drive while on pain meds (ultram) and waiting on Liberty Mutual to do something.Do I have a solid case?

Jill answers:
You have to report an injury on the day that it happens in order for your company to submit a claim for Work mans Comp. You cannot tell them after the fact, it doesn’t count. Report it, get a lawyer and never settle on the case so they pay your medical bills from your injury for life.

Lizzie asks…
gastric/rectal burning pains?
I am getting pains in my rectal area which can radiate to my testicles and penis. It usually occurs about 30 minutes after a bowel movement and can last anything from 30 minutes to many hours.
I am awaiting an endoscopy as I was having discomfort in my oesaphagus, and I’ve been taking Zoton 30mg for the last few months which, stops that discomfort, so long as I keep taking it. I believe I have acid reflux but there is the small possibility of an ulcer too.
The rectal pain, feels like it’s in my colon/rectum/anus area mainly. It’s quite a burn like pain. Very hot feeling. I’ve been thinking it may be a fissure or hemmoroids? Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

Jill answers:
I’m thinking of it as Hemorrhoids. But only your Physician can confirm that.

Sick…….. Serious answers PLEASE?
I have been really sick for about a month, my stomach had been hurting really bad, I had been throwing up, had really bad diahrrea. Well my doctor concluded it was my Gall Bladder so I had it removed. It was attached to something. That was Wednesday the 7th. On Monday of this week I started to get really sick again. My stomach was so bad that I was curled up in a ball crying, I couldn’t move & I would get really sick if I had anything to eat or drink. I called my surgeon & couldn’t get ahold of him. Tuesday I felt a little better & actually managed to get ahold of my doctor & set up an appointment for yesterday (Thursday). I woke up yesterday & was in so much pain, it was worse than it has ever been so my doc decided that it was either Dumping Syndrome, an Ulcer, or Spastic Colon Well the scope he did today & the ultrasound & blood work showed nothing. So he is talking about having a doctor look at my sphinter (SP).
What did he rule out with the tests & scope? & Any ideas what it is?
My doctor is a spaz && doesn’t explain things very well.

Jill answers:
Have you had a stool sample tested? With those symptoms, I would wonder if you should be checked for colitis, which is an infection of the colon. A stool sample should also check for parasites.
Probably what they were screening for with the blood test, scope and ultrasound would include a systemic infection of some sort, growths, ulcers, cancer, perforations or twists in your bowel, and possibly things like celiac disease–you’ll have to ask your doctor exactly what they were testing for, or request a copy of the test results to find out exactly.

A question for people with Crohns w/without intestinal ulcers?
I have Crohns with an ulcer where I had my colon resection. I am on Imuran right now. My question is it normal for you to have 2-3 good weeks then 2-3 bad weeks with moderate to severe pain and so on. I call my doctor maybe once a month with a health issue (pain, can’t eat, fatigue) and I feel like im being a pain, or im expecting to much to feel good more than bad…what should my expectations be? How do you feel most of the time?

Jill answers:
Try spend more time doing the things you enjoy. Walking , TV , Art , Music, Nice Food, Company etc.
Get help with things and tasks that you don;t like so you spend less time on them.
Basicallly keep occupied and feel better . Good Luck.

acidophilus upsetting stomach while pregnant?? help?
Ive been taking it for 2 days and ever since ive been having a really bad upset stomach and not diarrhea but soft stools. I started taking it to help me not test positive for group B and to not get anymore yeast infections since I already had one. but Im not sure I can take it anymore. is it just cleaning out my system? will it get better? I know its for digestive help and ive been eating really bad foods so maybe thats what its doing? I remember having this problem when I started to eat really healthy out of the blue before I was pregnant. but why is it upsetting my stomach?? thanks!
is it because Im not taking the pearls Im taking the pills? and Im taking 2 a day because I was told I had to take 4 billion cells daily

Jill answers:
Acidophilus is a natural component of yogurt. The kind you take in pill form is closely related. Some people have a minor reaction for a few days, as you are.
If you are able to drink milk (not lactose intolerant), try drinking milk with the pills. It is pretty much what the bacteria expect to find. If you happen to be lactose intolerant, have some soy milk with the pills. Eventually your digestive system will be humming along.
You are pregnant, so cut out the really bad food, whatever it is.

Lizzie asks…
how to handle your Ibs while pregnant?
I found out i am 6 weeks pregnant. i also suffer from severe Ibs. i finding it really hard because my Ibs has really flared up for the last 4 weeks or so. for about the last 2 weeks i was badly constipated waking up with bad cramps and gases but this changed on friday when i got severe diarrhea which i had since then. my breasts are also very sore and started to swell. i went to get the measured 2 weeks ago but seem to be bigger again. how can i help them because they are very uncomfortable in a bra. i made an appointment with the doctor to try get advice but couldn’t get on till tuesday. please help me if you have any advice for me. thanks

Jill answers:
Maintain a healthy diet, avoid any foods that are known to you to cause you problems. The hormones in pregnancy could play havoc with your bowels, but monitor them. Increase your fluids to help decrease constipation, even prunes or prune juice on a daily basis is a natural way of trying to preven constipation.
Your doctor will help further with your bowel irritations. It may settled once the hormones level out, but may not. Your doctor should have the suggestions.
As for your breasts, this is normal. They are developing the “milk glands” so they will be sore and they will swell. Breasts change sizes numerous times during pregnancy and also after birth when the milk actually “comes in” they will enlarge again.

37wks2days pregnant getting really sick need advice?
Alright so I’ve seen a couple questions on here but it isn’t quite what I wanted to ask.
Its my first pregnancy, and i’ve had a ruff time so to speak, I don’t think I went longer than a week without a cold of some sort this entire pregnancy and what you can take while your pregnant doesn’t work….but just before my 37 week mark i started getting insomnia. The braxton hicks did wavier with extra soakings in the tub, but it started to come back in a full most painful bouts. My doctor swears up and down that everything is solved by the drinking of more water. well I drink 2.5 gallons of water EVERYDAY. And until recently it did make me feel a lot better, also made it so I couldn’t be further than 5 ft from the bathroom lol. But lately the braxton hicks as he calls it is getting really bad major pelvic pain, abdominal cramps, vomiting, and now the worst diarrhea. My doctor gave me zofran and after a day it cleared up the vomiting but my stomach has been so tense and painful and the cramps are insane. But what is the worst is the diarrhea, i’m getting dehydrated, and my doctor said its just preparing for the baby i’m dilated 2cm and just starting to efface. i noticed it last night that i’m not only spotting blood from my vagina its coming from my you know what. Do I need to call him? I’ve given it two days to get better and NOTHING is helping.

Jill answers:
Any rectal bleeding is cause for calling a doctor.
If you are getting really dehydrated, you might need to get to the hospital so that you can get an IV with fluids in it.
Good luck!!

Mark asks…
Hot flashes while 15/16 weeks pregnant?
I’ve read about people having hotflashes while they Are pregnant but usually not this early. Its not just hotflashes alone, as soon as I feel a hotflash coming on I get almost instant diarrhea t.m.I I know I’m sorry but idk what else to do but ask. It’s uncomfortable . I feel hot all of a sudden and my stomach starts cramping up really bad. And I have to go. It’s usually after I eat something salty. Last time it happened I ate a pickle w a small amount of salt bc I know I should be staying away from high salt intake. So is this normal or not?

Jill answers:
Something like this has been happening to me sence week 12 im currenty 19 weeks but i get a hotflash then an hour or so later i really got to go pee my doc says its normal for what im experienceing and it would be normal to have bowl movements right after
