Being married is good for your health
PROVO — The most effective colon cancertreatment includes more than chemotherapy and surgery. It alsoincludes a spouse.
A recently released study found that, even with age, race andthe stage at which the cancer was discovered taken into account,married people were more likely to survive colon cancer thansingle, divorced or widowed people.
BYU health economist Sven Wilson, who co-authored the study thatis being published in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, said thatwasn’t a huge surprise; at his home, his wife is usually tellinghim to go to the doctor when he complains about not feelingwell.
“Having a spouse helps you kind of pinpoint problems and getthem treated more quickly,” Wilson said. “You can think of a spouseas kind of an informal nurse or caregiver.”
Numerous studies into other types of cancer as well as healthissues in general have shown that married people are more likely tohave better health outcomes. This particular study looked athundreds of thousands of individuals who had been diagnosed withcolon cancer and found that cancer tends to be picked up earlieramong married people, and married people are more likely to getsurgery and other aggressive forms of treatments.
Sandy Moody, a social worker at Utah Valley Regional MedicalCenter who works frequently with cancer patients, has seen the sametype of results in her work.
“When you’re in a marriage relationship, you tend to encouragethe other person to get checkups, to take care of health concerns,to take their medicine and go to treatment like they should,” shesaid.
This data didn’t look at the emotional and mental support of aspouse; rather, the social support that gave married people a boostfocused on having someone else monitoring health, asking questions,encouraging patients to go through more aggressive treatments andthe like.
Moody, however, attested to the benefit of that in healing. Aspouse can act as a cheerleader, she said, and people who don’thave someone to act in that function may not be as emotionallystrong.
“The more positive people are, the more quickly they tend toheal,” she said.
While most of the big findings were expected, there was onesurprise in the study; Wilson said the numbers showed that men andwomen benefitted about equally from the marriage factor inhealing.
“Conventional wisdom is that men benefit more than women do,” hesaid. “This doesn’t confirm that view.”
The study did not look at whether the married people werealready healthier; according to the report, healthy people may bemore likely to get or stay married. Moody said numerous studiesalso have shown that single people are more likely to be stressedfrom dealing with challenges like finances alone, which emitscertain hormones and can actually make them less healthy.
