Por lo tanto cada vez que hay sangrado al evacuar (Cáp. 3) es obligatorio establecer con certeza su causa.
La importancia de diagnosticar la presencia de pólipos esta determinada por el hecho de que las variedades neoplásica y congénita aunque benignos tienen el potencial de volverse malignos con el correr del tiempo. De hecho la gran mayoría de los casos de cáncer de colon se originan en pólipos que no fueron detectados a tiempo.
Los pólipos inflamatorios no se malignizan, pero no se puede establecer la naturaleza del pólipo hasta que no se realiza la biopsia, por lo que es imprescindible analizar cada pólipo que se extrae. El diagnostico y tratamiento de los pólipos del colon es una manera de prevenir el cáncer del colon.
El diagnostico se hace mediante el examen endoscópico del colon (Cáp. 6) lo que se llama colonoscopia. Se examina todo el colon y cuando se encuentran pólipos se extirpan en ese momento, utilizando equipos especiales y electro coagulación. Cuando los pólipos son muy grandes puede ser necesario una segunda colonoscopia. Cada especialista que realiza colonoscopia debe estar preparado para resecar pólipos si los encuentra.
Siempre que se reseca un pólipo debe realizarse la biopsia por que sin ella no es posible establecer con seguridad el tipo de pólipo.
Todas las personas mayores de 40 años aun sin síntomas, deben en algún momento realizarse una colonoscopia para detectar la presencia de pólipos y resecarlos, si resultase de tipo neoplásico, debe repetirse la colonoscopia dentro de un año y si esta resultara normal debe examinarse de nuevo al paciente dentro de 3 a 5 años.

Colon polyps are tumors that grow out of the mucous that covers the inside of the colon. In general, they are round forms in the shape of a cherry that grow towards the interior of the colon. The polyps are naturally diverse. There are inflamed polyps, neoplastic polyps, and congenital polyps. All of these can be found in various sizes, from very small-millimeters in diameter-to five or more centimeters. The reason for the formation of the neoplastic polyps has not been established, though these are the most commonly occurring. There are a variety of polyps that are related to genetic factors, which usually appear in families.
Frequently, these polyps don’t produce symptoms. They are found when the colon is examined. Sometimes the polyps will cause bleeding during bowel movements, and if so, it is common to see fresh red blood in the feces. Generally there is not a lot of blood and its presence is similar to that produced by hemorrhoids, with which polyps are often confused. Each time that there is bleeding during a bowel movement (article 3) it is necessary to establish the cause with certainty.
The importance of diagnosing the presence of polyps is determined by the fact that the neoplastic and congenital varieties, though benign, have the potential to become malignant with time. In fact, the majority of cases of colon cancer originate in polyps that were not detected soon enough.
The inflamed polyps don’t become malignant, but it is impossible to establish the nature of the polyp until the patient has a biopsy. Because of this, it is essential to analyze each polyp that is extracted in a biopsy. The diagnosis and treatment of colon polyps is a way of preventing colon cancer.
The diagnosis is done through an endoscopic exam of the colon (article 6), which is called a colonoscopy. In this exam, doctors examine the whole colon, and when they find polyps, they extirpate, or remove completely, immediately. The extirpation is done using special equipment and electro-coagulation. When the polyps are very large, it may be necessary to do a second colonoscopy. Each specialist that does colonoscopies should be prepared to dry out polyps upon finding them.
Each time a polyp is dried out, a biopsy should be done. Without the biopsy it is impossible to establish the type of polyp with any certainty.
Everyone over 40 years old, even without symptoms, should at some point have a colonoscopy to check for the presence of polyps. Polyps found should be dried. If the result of the biopsy shows the polyps to be neoplastic, the colonoscopy should be repeated within one year. If the second exam results are normal, the patient should be examined again within 3 to 5 years.
