High Winds Pound Harbors
SOUTHWEST HARBOR — Last Friday’s stormy weather kept the U.S. Coast Guard busy, but very few boats were reported damaged.
The Coast Guard’s Northern New England Sector in Portland reported 17 cases over the weekend involving vessels that went adrift during the heavy weather. All of them proved to have been unmanned.
East winds reportedly gusted to nearly 60 miles per hour Friday morning. Crew aboard the Captain Henry Lee Ferry that goes to Swans Island from Bass Harbor reported a wind gust of 63 mph.
In Southwest Harbor, which is exposed to the east, “it was as rough as I’ve ever seen it,” harbormaster Dennis Dever said. “We had 6-foot seas coming in at the entrance.”
Despite the heavy seas, the only casualty was a 20-foot sailboat that broke loose from its mooring and went aground on one of the rare soft patches of harbor shoreline. The boat was rescued “at the crack of dawn,” Mr. Dever said, by two Bernard lobstermen who spotted the drifting boat, pursued it in their skiff and tied it to an apple tree.
“The boat was miraculously undamaged,” Mr. Dever said.
Harbormaster Charlie Phippen, in Bar Harbor, reported limited impacts from the storm.
“We had a few floats break loose,” Mr. Phippen said. “It was no big deal.” For more maritime news, pick up a copy of the Mount Desert Islander.
