I have burning behind my incision from a recent colon resection?
I was diagnosed with diverticulitis and had emergency surgery to cut out 12" of my colon 11 days ago. When I first got home the incision burned constantly and very bad. It went away after a couple days and has come back as of 2 days ago. It seems to be more on the right side and my incision feels very hard. Is this normal? What causes this burning and will my incision not be hard in the future? Thank you all for any answers.
I am familiar with colon resection and am following 2 cases now, post-op, over a year and successful. Except in one of the cases, we have endocrine cancer (hyperplasia) which is independent, and not a stage 4 cancer originating in the bowel.
You would have had diverticulosis initially, then infection which is diverticulitis, and just maybe, pre-cancerous or cancerous tissue, possibly a malignancy in polyps. It is actually wonderul that you were not diagnosed as having cancer, as in – a tumor, or stage 3 infection of the intestinal walls with perforation and invasion into the tissues themselves – but it sounds as if you could have? Again, at the very least, you certainly had diverticulosis, which are pockets or diverticuli, packed with waste, within the intestinal lining. So, diverticulitis is infection of the diverticuli, which can lead to cancer and obviously removal or resection. Those pockets are caused by IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome, not Inflammatory Bowel Disease, so not to be confused with IBD) and constipation, irregular bowel movements, and pressure of feces and packing of waste into pockets formed in the colon, which are the diverticuli. It is extremely good news that you did not require a stoma and colostomy. Enough said.
You may have an infection in the incision and possibly, in the viscera or visceral cavity. It is not normal, but It happens in some cases. You were wise to ask, and you are not to be viewed as a problematic patient, with either hypochondriasis or Munchausen's. You hate hospitals and treatment. You do not go out of your way to seek hospitalizatiuon and medical care.
Again, in some cases, the incision (on any operation, including joint replacements) has to be re-done, and the wound, presumably infected tissues and scars debrided. Usually, you will get a strong regimen of antibiotics, and should be rehospitalized to monitor it, and to prevent sepsis from occurring. The staples must be treated by a medical professional, or by nurses.
If this is caught on time, there is an excellent chance that it will heal well, and will be soft and normal, probably in 6 months
If you see redness and swelling around any of the staples, and flaking skin then infection may be suspected, or certainly the case.
At the same time, you should have bloodwork, temperature, BP monitored etc. Hardness can be infection, but not absolutely, totally and inarguably. It can also be a part of healing, but it sounds a bit suspect. Do not let it go unchecked. Do not allow yourself to be brushed off or neglected by any doctor who doesn't agree. Attend a walk-in clinic, or go to ER ASAP.

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.
